Severe weather and other threats to a business’s ability to operate can occur at any time. Although you can’t foresee every disaster, you can put together a comprehensive business continuity plan that addresses most potential threats. If you don’t have a plan in place, implement basic protections immediately, such as an evacuation strategy and insurance. But, from there, take your time to get it right. Call us at (732) 238-8629 for help identifying and managing the costs associated with a business continuity plan.

If you’re sending money abroad, beware of a possible 1% excise tax. This new tax generally applies to transfers of cash, money orders or cashier’s checks from U.S. senders to foreign recipients via certain remittance transfer providers such as Western Union and MoneyGram. But transfers made via credit or debit card, bank account transfer, or digital wallet aren’t subject to the excise tax. Essentially, the tax doesn’t apply to transfers from accounts in financial institutions subject to Bank Secrecy Act requirements or to credit or debit cards issued in the U.S. So to avoid the extra expense, consider using a card or ACH transfer from your own bank account. How much should you budget for retirement expenses? One common guideline says 60% to 70% of your current income. Some expenses might decrease or disappear (commuting costs, mortgage payments), while others are likely to increase (health care, property taxes). Specificity, not to mention incorporating inflation into your calculation, is important. We can help — call us at (732) 238-8629.

It’s the fourth quarter, small business owners. That means, just like in a football game, you have limited time to make winning moves — in this case, to lower your taxes for 2026. Many year-end strategies require time to evaluate, implement and document properly. Waiting until the last minute may leave you with little choice but to punt and hope for the best. The sooner you begin planning, the more options you may have in your tax-saving playbook. Call us at (732) 238-8629 to huddle up and discuss a game plan tailored to your business.

Cryptocurrency holders: Be alert for a new IRS impersonation scam. Fraudsters are mailing fake IRS letters directing recipients to a bogus “Digital Asset Compliance Portal.” The letters instruct recipients to scan a QR code that leads to a fraudulent website designed to look like IRS.gov. The site may ask for personal information, cryptocurrency wallet details, or exchange account credentials that criminals can use to steal identities or digital assets. If you receive one of these letters, don’t respond. Report any suspicious communication to the IRS immediately. If you have questions about an IRS notice or digital asset reporting, we’re here to help. Contact us at (732) 238-8629.

Are you paying yourself and family members who work in your business reasonable compensation? The IRS requires compensation (including salaries, bonuses and perks) to reflect services performed and be comparable to compensation for similar roles in similar organizations. This is especially important for owner-employees and related parties. Payments to relatives may be deductible, but only if they represent reasonable wages for bona fide services and are well documented. Excess compensation may be reclassified as nondeductible distributions of income, while underpaying may raise payroll tax issues. Regularly reviewing compensation practices can help reduce audit risk. Call us at (732) 238-8629 for guidance.

If you’re age 50 or older, a great way to enhance your retirement nest egg is to make “catch-up” contributions to your 401(k), 403(b), 457 plan, SIMPLE or IRA. And workers age 60 to 63 can potentially boost their 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan up to 150% of the regular catch-up limit. For 2026, this means an extra contribution of $11,250 ($5,250 for SIMPLEs). Want to make the most of tax-advantaged savings opportunities? Contact us at (732) 238-8629.
