When money feels tight, it's tempting to think you have to make one big change to fix everything.
Sometimes, though, it's worth starting with the recurring expenses you may not have looked at in a while.
Check what you're paying for, what has changed, and what still makes sense for your life.
You may discover some room in your budget. Or you may confirm that your money is already going toward things you genuinely need.

Either way, understanding your spending is a useful first step.
Save this for your next money checkup. 💙

Personal finance is often treated as if knowing what to do is the hardest part.

Learn how to budget. Spend less than you earn. Save for emergencies. Pay down debt.

The information matters, of course. But knowing what to do is only part of the picture.

I've heard the idea that personal finance is about 20% knowledge and 80% behavior. I think it gets at something important: knowing what to do and being able to do it are two different things.

You can know you need an emergency fund and still struggle to set money aside when every dollar already has a job.

You can understand how a budget works and still have trouble sticking to it when life throws something unexpected your way.

You can know that paying down debt is important and still feel overwhelmed about where to start.

That doesn't automatically mean you lack knowledge or discipline. Our financial decisions are shaped by our circumstances, habits, emotions, priorities, and the resources we have available.

That's why financial counseling isn't just about giving someone information. It's about helping them figure out how to use that information in their own life, work through obstacles, and build a plan they can realistically follow.

Because knowing what to do matters. But having the support, resources, and practical steps to actually do it matters, too. 💙

Information first. Judgment never.

What if you could enjoy Christmas without dreading January? 🎄

Between gifts, groceries, holiday gatherings, and all the little extras, the season can add up faster than we expect.

A little planning now can make a difference later. And no, it doesn’t have to mean a perfect budget or cutting out all the fun.

I’m working on something to help you head into the holidays with a plan that works for your real life. 💙💛

Follow along as I share practical ways to make the holidays easier on your finances.

Every new chapter has a beginning.

The figuring it out. The learning as you go. The moments when you're not entirely sure what you're doing, but you keep showing up anyway.

Building Valkyrie Family Financial Counseling has been a lot of that for me. Learning, growing, trying new things, and taking the next step even when I don't have the whole picture figured out yet.

I'm learning that progress doesn't always look impressive while it's happening. Sometimes it just looks like unlocking the door and getting to work.

Whatever you're building or working toward right now, keep showing up. 💙

It's easy to spend so much time thinking about where you wish you were that you forget to look at where you are.

Maybe you're not where you thought you'd be financially. Maybe you're starting later than you wanted to, cleaning up a few mistakes, or trying to figure out what the next step even looks like.

You can't change where you were yesterday. But you can decide what to do today.

You don't need a perfect starting point. You just need a place to begin. 💙

Start where you are.

A little business milestone worth celebrating! 💙💛

A few weeks ago, I was honored to receive one of the **Distinguished Founder Awards** at the Second Annual Oklahoma State Certified Business Incubator Banquet, hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.

Oklahoma has an amazing incubator program for small businesses, and I'm excited to be part of such a great program!

It was a privilege to be among the Oklahoma entrepreneurs recognized for the work we're doing to build and grow our small businesses.

When I started Valkyrie Family Financial Counseling, I had a vision of helping individuals and families build financial confidence, make informed decisions, and create greater stability for their futures.

Building a business is a journey full of learning, trying new things, failing, and figuring things out along the way. It's encouraging to have that work recognized, and I'm grateful to be part of a program that supports small business owners as we turn our ideas into reality.

I'm so excited to keep growing Valkyrie and serving families in our communities. There's still a lot of work ahead, but it's pretty special to pause and appreciate how far this journey has come in just this first year!

💙💛

P.S. My actual award wasn't available for the photo, lol, so I borrowed someone else's for the picture. 😂 Don't worry, the recognition was mine, and my award is here now!

You don't have to fix everything at once. 💙

Sometimes we get so focused on making a big change that we overlook the small ones that are actually within our reach.
Maybe you can't save $500 right now—but you can save $10.
Maybe you can't cut $500 from your spending—but you can find $50.
Maybe you can't pay off the credit card—but you can make an extra payment.
Small steps still count.

Now, if you're struggling to keep a roof over your head, keep the lights on, buy groceries, or get to work—that's different. Those foundational needs come first.

But if you're working toward improving your financial situation?
It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

Progress is still progress, even when it doesn't look dramatic. 💙

One thing they don't tell you about starting a small business…

Sometimes you're the business owner, the content creator, the designer, AND the person teaching yourself how to make all the pieces work together.

This week, that meant finding the landing page I built several months ago, connecting a signup form, setting up an automated email, and figuring out how to deliver a PDF download.

There was some trial and error. A little troubleshooting. OK - more trouble shooting and trial and error than I care to admit. 😅

But it finally works!

My free Your Money Snapshot download is ready, and I'm pretty proud of getting all the pieces connected without seeing if my laptop could fly. 🫣

It's a good reminder that building a business isn't just about what you know. Sometimes it's about being willing to learn the things you don't know yet and getting out of your comfort zone.

One step at a time. 💙💛

Start with information—not judgment. 💙
Pull together your bank and credit card statements and look at what's actually happening.

Don't worry about fixing everything yet.
First, look for patterns:
- What are your biggest expenses?
- What expenses happen every month?
- Where are you spending more than you realized?
- Are there expenses that only happen occasionally?

You can't make a good plan with information you don't have.

And remember: your numbers aren't a report card. They're simply telling you where you are right now.

Once you know where the money is going, you can start deciding what you want to do differently.

What if you looked at your spending in hours instead of dollars?

A $100 purchase sounds different when you realize it might represent several hours of your take-home pay.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it.

It just gives you another piece of information to consider before you spend.

I wrote more about this in this week's Valkyrie blog:
https://www.valkyriefamilyfinancialcounseling.com/blog/how-many-hours-of-your-life-does-that-purchase-cost

If you've ever looked at your bank account and thought, “Was that really worth it?” — this one's for you. 💙
