This one is important.
If your business collects sales tax or withholds taxes from employee paychecks, that money is not operating cash.
Michigan recently updated its guidance regarding personal liability for unpaid sales tax and payroll withholding.
In certain situations, owners, officers, LLC managers, and other responsible individuals can be held personally liable when those taxes aren’t paid.
And paying vendors, payroll, or other bills while knowingly leaving tax obligations unpaid can create serious problems.
When cash gets tight, it can be tempting to think:
“I’ll use this money now and replace it next month.”
That hole has swallowed plenty of businesses.
Treat sales tax and payroll withholding like money sitting in a locked box. It belongs to the government, not the business.

Thinking about buying equipment, computers, furniture, machinery, or other business assets before year-end?
2026 offers some very generous federal deductions, including 100% bonus depreciation on qualifying property and much higher Section 179 limits.
But Michigan business owners need to be careful.
Michigan does not follow every new federal depreciation rule.
That means your federal tax return and Michigan return may calculate depreciation differently.
Translation: buying a $20,000 piece of equipment because someone said, “You can write the whole thing off!” is not a tax strategy. 😂
Run the numbers before you buy.

📦 “Is Your Inventory Making Money or Just Taking Up Space?”
A full warehouse or stockroom can look like a sign that business is healthy. But inventory sitting on a shelf is also money that is not available for something else.
The problem becomes harder to see when a business carries dozens or hundreds of products.
Some products may sell quickly and consistently. Others may move slowly, require frequent markdowns, or remain in inventory for months. Meanwhile, a popular item might repeatedly sell out because purchasing decisions are based on instinct instead of actual sales patterns.
That is where inventory analytics can help.
Your existing sales and inventory data can be analyzed to answer questions such as:
• Which products are selling fastest and slowest?
• How long does inventory typically sit before it sells?
• Which products generate the most revenue and profit?
• Are certain items being overstocked while others are repeatedly unavailable?
• Are seasonal patterns affecting demand?
• How much cash is currently tied up in slow-moving inventory?
A dashboard can then bring those answers together so you can monitor inventory levels, sales trends, turnover, margins, and potential problem areas without digging through multiple spreadsheets and reports.
You do not need more data just for the sake of having more data.
You need to know what your data is telling you about where your money is going.

If your employees earn overtime or tips, your payroll system needs to be tracking them correctly.
New federal tax rules created deductions for certain qualified overtime pay and tips, but there’s an important catch:
“No tax on overtime” does not mean all overtime wages are tax-free.
Employers still have payroll-tax and reporting responsibilities, and only certain qualifying amounts are eligible for the employee deduction.
Restaurants, salons, hospitality businesses, contractors, manufacturers, and other employers paying overtime should make sure their payroll software is properly separating and reporting these amounts now.
January is a terrible time to discover payroll wasn’t set up correctly in August. 😬

📊 “Which Customers Are Actually Making You Money?”
Revenue can look great on paper while some customers are quietly costing the business money.
A customer who generates $25,000 in sales may look more valuable than one who generates $15,000. But what happens when the $25,000 customer requires more labor, frequent rush orders, discounts, returns, special handling, or other costs?
That is where customer profitability analysis becomes useful.
Instead of looking only at total sales, I can help businesses analyze customer data to answer questions such as:
* Which customers generate the highest profit, not just the most revenue?
* Which customers have unusually high service or fulfillment costs?
* Are discounts increasing sales but reducing margins?
* Is a small group of customers responsible for most of the company’s profit?
* Are there customers or customer segments the business should be trying harder to retain?
* Which trends are changing over time?
The result can be turned into a dashboard or management report that makes those patterns much easier to see.
You do not necessarily need new software or a massive database to start. Useful information may already exist in your sales records, invoices, CRM exports, spreadsheets, accounting system, or other business data.
The goal of data analytics isn’t to give you more numbers. It’s to help you make better decisions with the numbers you already have.

Your business probably has more useful data than you realize. The problem is that most of it is scattered across spreadsheets, accounting software, sales reports, customer records, and other systems.
That data can answer questions like:
• Which products or services are actually the most profitable?
• Where are sales increasing or declining?
• Which customers generate the most revenue?
• Are your prices keeping up with your costs?
• What numbers should you be watching every month?
• Where is money, time, or inventory being wasted?
I help businesses clean up their data, analyze what is happening, and turn the results into clear reports and dashboards that are easier to understand and use.
Services can include data cleanup, custom dashboards, KPI reporting, sales and profitability analysis, pricing analysis, forecasting, Excel analysis, Tableau dashboards, and other customized business analytics projects.
You do not need to be a large company with a dedicated data department. Sometimes you just need someone to take the information you already have and help you figure out what it is telling you.

If you own a U.S. LLC or corporation, here’s one less thing to worry about:
Federal BOI reporting is no longer required for U.S. businesses.
FinCEN finalized the rule in August 2026, permanently removing the Beneficial Ownership Information reporting requirement for domestic businesses and U.S. persons.
That also means you should be careful about emails, letters, or companies trying to charge you to “file your BOI report.”
Before you pay anyone, verify that the filing is actually required.
Small-business compliance is confusing enough without paying for something you don’t need. 🧾

Do you know how much you’ll owe at tax time?👀
You should!
Taxes are very predictable and should not come as a surprise. You can predict (sometimes down to the penny) what your taxes will be.
Maybe you owe more than you thought because you didn’t maximize credits……🤷♀️
Or maybe your paycheck doesn’t hold enough every week to cover the whole tax bill.
🚨Tax software like H&R Block or TurboTax do not ask you ALL the important questions for credits and deductions 😳 Are you okay with handing over your money to the IRS??🤯
We work hard for our money so why not take advantage of the tax laws and make them work in your favor.
If I can’t find you additional credits or deductions, you pay NOTHING!
But at least you’ll have a good idea of your tax liability.
