The IRS moved to reflect the higher cost of transportation. As you continue to keep track of your business, medical, and moving miles, note the old rates per mile for the first half of the year versus the new rates effective for miles after July 1, 2022:

Business rate was $0.585 per mile; new rate is $0.625 per mile.
Medical/moving rate was $0.18 per mile; new rate is $0.22 per mile.
Charitable rate remains at $0.14 per mile for 2022.

The IRS is being helpful!

I know it might come as a shocker, but in the good news column, the IRS issued Revenue Procedure 2022-32 earlier this month. The IRS has extended the time for filing an estate portability election for a decedent not required to file an estate return from two years from date of death to five years from date of death. An interesting move that allows for post-mortem estate planning for couples where their total estate is near the exemption level at the date of death of the first decedent.

What does this mean? If the a married person has died with an estate near $11 million and the estate grows over the next five years to be in excess of that number, the executor may still file a complete estate tax return for the decedent and carryover the decedent's exemption to the surviving spouse, effectively doubling the estate tax exemption to over $22 million.

For estate tax planning and income tax planning, please call. The tax laws are always changing, let us help you keep up with those changes.

Many taxpayers continue to wait in frustration at IRS delays in processing their 2020 and 2021 returns and refunds. Keep in mind this picture is from ONE of the IRS return processing centers around the country. What you are seeing are rows and rows of unprocessed tax returns waiting to be processed by human beings in the Austin, Texas Service Center. When third parties rely on IRS data to confirm income levels for lending decisions, amongst other reasons, this backlog has ripple effects in the economy and will continue to do so until at least late this year.

Natasha Sarin on Twitter “At the IRS in Austin, cafeteria is overrun with paper returns awaiting processing by campus’s dedicated employees who will *keystroke* line items into the IRS’s database Investing in the IRS essential to overhaul this manual system, so agency can serve taxpayers way they deserve”
