Homelessness. It’s becoming an issue in the city of Denton. Last year, I spent a lot of time giving water to the homeless, providing them with information about the nearest shelters or just praying and hanging out with them.
As a child, my father and experienced homelessness, sleeping in friends offices or the bathroom so this topic weighs heavy on my heart.
I put on my reporter hat and talked with officers Hill and Serna about this and all this could say is “Something has to give.” Homeowners are spending up to $4,000 a year on property taxes, a lot of that money goes to resources that help the homeless like Our Daily Bread.
“A lot of homeless people in this city, refuse the help we give them,” said officer Serna. All that money spent on property taxes is being wasted. The homeless that gather around businesses on the square cause residents to complain but the city council allows them to congregate there, so like Serna said something has give eventually cause citizens aren’t trying to pay all that money just so the homeless can use drugs, go to jail to detox just to start the cycle over again.
My head can rest easy knowing guys like these two are committed to solving this epidemic
