Business owners, I'm curious:

What is one number in your business you wish you understood better?

Maybe it's:

• How much you're actually making after expenses
• How much you can safely pay yourself
• Whether a particular product or service is really profitable
• Where all the money seems to go 😄
• Or something completely different

You don't need to know the financial term for it.

In fact, “I just want to understand where my money is going” is a perfectly good answer.

But busy and profitable aren't always the same thing.

You can have plenty of sales coming in and still find that there isn't much left after expenses.

That's why it's helpful to look beyond how much you're selling and ask:

What is it costing me to make those sales?
Are my expenses increasing?
What's actually left after everything is paid?

You don't have to become a financial expert.

You just need numbers that are current enough—and clear enough—to help you understand whether all that hard work is actually helping your business move forward.

Being busy feels good. Knowing you're profitable feels even better.

It’s easy for bookkeeping to slip to the bottom of the list when you’re busy running the rest of your business.

But when the books get behind, everything starts to feel a little harder:
You’re not sure where things stand.
Tax time feels stressful.
Decisions feel more like guessing than planning.

Getting caught up doesn’t have to happen all at once. Sometimes the best first step is simply figuring out what needs attention and making a plan.

One thing I've learned about running a business:

Taking time away from it matters, too.

It's easy to think there's always one more thing you could be doing—one more email, one more task, one more thing to cross off the list.

But rest, time with people you enjoy, and doing things that have absolutely nothing to do with work matter too.

I'm taking some of that time right now. 😊

That's okay.

You don't need to diagnose your own bookkeeping before talking to a bookkeeper. 😄

Maybe your books are current, but you don't really understand what the numbers are telling you.

Maybe you've fallen behind and need help catching up.

Maybe you're doing everything yourself and it's becoming too much.

Or maybe you're starting a business and just want to make sure you're setting things up well from the beginning.

You don't have to know exactly what you need.

Sometimes the first step is simply sitting down, looking at where things are now, and figuring out what would actually be helpful.

Sometimes the bookkeeping system that worked perfectly when you started your business...stops working perfectly.

That's not necessarily a problem.

It may actually be a sign that your business has changed.

Maybe you have more customers now.

More transactions.

More expenses to track.

More invoices going out.

Or you're making bigger decisions and need better information than you did when you were just getting started.

Business growth doesn't always mean you need a more 'complicated' bookkeeping system.

But it may mean you need a better one.

It's okay to occasionally ask:

“Does the way I'm doing this still work for the business I have today?”

Bookkeeping is a lot easier when it becomes a routine instead of a rescue mission. 😄

You don't need to spend hours every week staring at numbers.

But regularly taking a little time to:

• make sure transactions are categorized
• reconcile your accounts
• look at what's coming in and going out
• review how your business is actually doing

can prevent a lot of confusion later.

The longer bookkeeping sits untouched, the bigger the job tends to feel.

A simple, consistent routine keeps little things little—and gives you current numbers when you actually need them.

Consistency doesn't have to mean complicated.

Behind on your bookkeeping?

First—don't panic.

It happens.

Maybe business got busy. Maybe bookkeeping kept getting pushed down the list. Or maybe you weren't quite sure what needed to be done, so it became easier to leave it for another day.

Whatever the reason, being behind doesn't mean you have to stay behind.

Bookkeeping can be cleaned up. Transactions can be sorted out. Accounts can be reconciled. And little by little, that pile you've been avoiding can become current books you actually understand.

You don't need to have everything organized before asking for help.

Sometimes getting organized **is** the help you need.
