This year I gave one of my clients some help as he filed taxes for the first time himself. He learned all about the process, saved himself some money filing for free (yes totally free) online, and is going to collect a refund.

The best part is that refund is going to be the last bit he needs to pay off his credit card!! This is what it's all about.

The deadline this year has been pushed back to May 17, 2021. But why wait? If you usually get a refund, collect that money!

Were you expecting the standard financial "advice" that if you could just forego that morning cup of goodness you'd magically solve all your money issues?

That's just nonsense! Sorry, not sorry. There are SO many other choices that are SO much more important.

For example, does your employer offer a 401k? Are you taking advantage of the full company match? If they offer a 4% match and you make $60k, they will pay you an extra $2,400 this year to help you save for retirement!

So that coffee habit may cost $700 this year, but by focusing on the more important choices, you just made more than 3x the amount of of your coffee. (And if you think that's something, you should ask me about Roth IRAs! 😲)

Here's the real secret. At the end of the day, how you you spend your money has to 1) bring you joy and 2) be inline with your goals and what is most important to YOU.

So enjoy that morning cup! (Especially if that's what brings you joy!) During these crazy times your barista will be thankful.

Just make sure you tend to the important pieces!! (Your loans, your savings, your children's education, leaving your legacy)

This week, take one small step toward that future. Maybe work on that Spending Plan. Or read an article on investing from a well know source like Vanguard. Or make a goal to put some money into a true emergency fund.

Love this story from my client: she has a daughter in high school preparing for college, was recently facing some major repairs on her home and was generally worried about all the "scary financial documents" that came in the mail. She recently told me that while she would always wish she could make these choices together with her husband (he passed away a few years ago), she felt much less afraid of making choices because she was confident she was doing what was right for her and her family. She admitted that the fear wasn't totally gone, but it was no longer preventing her from taking action. Such a great transformation!

The reality is that we work together on any areas of clients' lives that are bringing financial stress...private schooling, reduced hours at work, concerns over COVID, time management, online spending, weekly meetings, priority lists, children's financial habits, saving for a down payment, paying off credit cards and student loans, etc. In short, if you're not confident with something, we're talking about it. Financial confidence is possible...you CAN get there!
