When interest rates rise, bond funds can lose value, creating paper losses and leaving investors unsure of when, or at what price, their investment may recover.

With an individual bond held to maturity, you know when the principal is scheduled to be repaid, assuming the issuer fulfills its obligation.

From what I've seen, people tend to understand their investment approach better when we use individual bonds. That understanding can lead to more confidence.

And more confidence can lead to calmer emotions during volatile markets.

So why don't we use individual bonds more often?

They're more work.

You can't automate everything. There is more monitoring, more trading, and more manual work on our end.

Plus, more time on a computer usually leads to a higher golf handicap.

Can't have that.

Navigating retirement tax strategies doesn't have to be a guessing game. This framework simplifies complex financial choices by categorizing them into red, yellow, and green light decisions.

When it comes to balancing Roth conversions against ACA tax credits, understanding the tweener (or yellow) scenario is where the real value lies. It’s all about deciding when to capture immediate savings versus when to play the long game for future benefits. A clear, actionable approach to managing your tax liability while maximizing your retirement income.

Building the Retirement Paycheck

Once you've decided when you're retiring and how much you'll need to spend, there's still a big question:

How should the portfolio actually be built to deliver that cash flow?

In this video, I walk through Robert and Denise's retirement portfolio and show how I approach that question.

Rather than starting with a generic 60/40 portfolio, I start with the cash flows they need, and then build the portfolio around those needs.

We look at:

• Cash for immediate needs
• Individual bonds for near- and intermediate-term cash flows
• Stocks for long-term growth
• How Social Security changes portfolio withdrawals
• Five-year vs. seven-year bond ladders
• Why an individual bond is different from a bond fund
• How the portfolio is designed to give stocks time to recover during a severe downturn
• Why different accounts don't necessarily need to hold the same stock/bond mix

The goal isn't to eliminate investment risk. It's to structure the portfolio so that short-term market volatility doesn't necessarily dictate what happens to your retirement paycheck.

One Social Security detail married couples shouldn't overlook:

When one spouse passes away, the survivor doesn't get to double dip and keep both benefits.

They generally receive whichever benefit is higher, their own or the survivor benefit.

That's an important consideration when deciding when to claim.

Taxes in Retirement 101: Tax Brackets, Account Types, RMDs, & IRMAA

This video is designed to build the foundation regarding tax knowledge as you near retirement. I walk through the major pieces of the retirement tax puzzle:

• Ordinary income and marginal tax brackets
• Long-term capital gains
• Taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts
• Social Security taxation
• Medicare IRMAA and the 2-year lookback
• Required minimum distributions (RMDs)

Educational purposes only. Tax rules and thresholds can change, and this video is not individualized tax, legal, or investment advice.

“I'm going to claim Social Security early because I want to get mine before they take it away.”

I understand the fear, but planning around Social Security disappearing entirely is probably too extreme.

Your claiming decision should be based on your retirement plan, not fear.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make when projecting their early retirement expenses is not accounting for the increase in health insurance premiums.

It’s worth doing some research and getting a customized quote before you call it quits so you know what to actually expect.

My clients also have access to Move Health, which is a great resource for getting their health insurance questions answered as they approach retirement and navigate the years before Medicare.

When should you claim Social Security?

It's a question I get quite a bit, and there are a lot of different opinions on the “right” age to claim.

In my latest video, I walk through Robert and Denise's hypothetical retirement plan and look at some of the biggest factors that go into the decision, including longevity, taxes, and survivor benefits.

I also look at one of the biggest concerns I'm hearing right now: potential Social Security benefit cuts.

If benefits were cut by 23%, would that mean you should claim at 62 instead?

I don't think so.

The more important question is what that reduction would actually do to your overall retirement plan.

I walk through the numbers and show how that plays out for Robert and Denise.

The fear of retiring right before a major recession often keeps people up at night, wondering if they’ll be forced back into the workforce when they should be enjoying their golden years.

I find this fear start to diminish as the plan unfolds, especially when we run through the historical audit. Seeing how your spending would have changed, if at all, during historical periods gives people peace of mind.

This breakdown explores the reality of retirement planning during economic downturns, specifically looking back at the challenging era of stagflation, often cited as one of the toughest periods for retirees.

Most retirees focus on what’s written on their 1040 tax forms, but there is a hidden tax that often catches people off guard: health insurance premiums.

This strategy breaks down how to strategically pull from different accounts to keep reported income below specific thresholds. By intentionally coordinating withdrawals, it’s possible to qualify for healthcare subsidies and avoid the income cliffs that derail so many retirement plans. It’s all about timing the distributions to keep cash flowing while protecting eligibility for those subsidies. A little planning today creates significant savings down the road.
