Most people think legacy planning is for the wealthy or the very old. It's not.

If you love someone and you have assets, you already have a legacy whether you planned it or not. The question isn't whether you'll leave something behind — it's whether you made any decisions about it or whether you're leaving those decisions to someone else.

Legacy planning isn't about death. It's about making things as easy and as clear as possible for the people you love.

Most people think legacy planning is for the rich or the elderly. It's not. If you love someone and you have assets, here's what you need to know.

Here's a question I ask clients more than almost any other this time of year: if something happened to you tomorrow, would the people you love know what to do?

Not in a morbid way — in a practical one. Would they know where things are? Who to call? What your wishes are? For most people the honest answer is probably not fully. That's not a failure. It's just something worth fixing.

October, with the holidays coming and family on everyone's mind, is actually a really good time to think about it. We're talking about exactly this all month.

A lot of people assume it's something they'll get to later, when they have more money or when they're older. But later has a way of arriving before anyone is ready.

September is almost over.

Which means the rush is officially here.

Medicare open enrollment opens in two weeks. The holidays are closer than they feel. And the tax planning window for the year is down to its last 90 days.

If you've been meaning to sit down and look at your finances before the year closes out, now is the time. Not next month. Now.

We spent all of September talking about exactly this. If you missed any of it, the blog is a good place to start.

Every January Willie hears the same thing from clients.

"We definitely overdid it this year."

And it almost never comes from people who lacked discipline. It comes from people who went into the holiday season without a number in mind.

Willie's advice: have a budget, have something in mind prior to October, so that every gift and every trip you take feels like a choice you made rather than something that happened to you.

That's the difference between holiday generosity and January regret.

Read the final post in our Before the Rush series here:

Holiday spending hits differently in retirement. Here's how to give generously this season without the financial regret that follows in January.

CLEVELAND, WE SAW YOU 🚌😂

Rolled through the city on the Funny Bus with some of our favorite people and laughed the entire way. Local history, city views, and jokes we're still quoting days later.

If you were there, you know. If you weren't, well, you'll just have to wonder what you missed 👀

🚗 Ever walk out of a restaurant, airport, or concert and think… “Where did I park?”

Let Google Maps remember for you!

📍 When you park:
1️⃣ Open Google Maps
2️⃣ Tap the blue dot showing your location
3️⃣ Tap Save parking

When it's time to leave, open Google Maps and find your saved parking spot.

Such a simple trick — but a VERY handy one! 📱
