Your life has accounts your financial statements will never show. 📊

We audit revenue. Margin. Cash flow.
We don't audit the life that built the business.

Twenty-seven years later, her piano book was still on page one.

We celebrate people who retire wealthy. But how often do we ask what a successful life looks like beyond the money?

A comfortable retirement. Financial independence. The freedom to make choices without worrying about every expense.

These are meaningful achievements, and they deserve recognition.

But financial success is only one part of a much bigger picture.

Our podcast conversation uses a fictional retiree to explore an interesting question:

Can someone achieve every financial goal and still discover that other areas of life need attention?

After more than 30 years in finance, I understand the value of financial security. It protects families, creates opportunities, and gives us choices.

She walked into the interview with little experience and a résumé that didn't tell the whole story.

Years later, she returned to thank the woman who saw beyond it.

We know when a business is losing money.

But do we recognize when our lives are losing something valuable?

In finance, we have systems for measuring performance, identifying risks, and detecting problems before they become expensive.

We examine revenue, profitability, cash flow, assets, and liabilities.

We ask difficult questions when the numbers don't add up.

Yet some of the most consequential imbalances in our lives never appear on a financial statement.

A thriving career can coexist with neglected relationships.

A growing business can demand more of our time than we ever intended to give.

We can speak confidently about our values while making daily decisions that quietly contradict them.

And we can accumulate impressive achievements without ever examining the story those achievements are helping us write.

The absence of a financial loss does not mean nothing valuable is being lost.

That realization became central to The Life Audit.

I wanted to explore what might happen if we examined our lives with some of the same discipline we bring to financial decisions.

Not to reduce life to numbers. Some of its greatest assets cannot be quantified.

But to ask better questions.

The purpose of an audit is not simply to identify what went wrong. It is to understand where we stand while we still have choices about what comes next.

There is something different about seeing your own book through a reader’s eyes. ❤️

I knew what I hoped The Life Audit would say when I wrote it.

But once a book leaves your hands, it belongs partly to the people who read it, to what they recognize in its pages, what makes them stop, what challenges them, and sometimes what they see differently afterward.

These reviews meant a great deal to me.

One reader described the book as a reminder that “as long as we have breath,” there is still an opportunity to review our choices and change what remains possible.

Another picked it up simply to peruse it and told me they couldn't put it down. What stayed with them was the book's honesty and the idea that some of the deposits we make into life's accounts may not reveal their value until much later.

That last observation particularly touched me because it gets to the heart of why I wrote this book.

Not everything that matters produces an immediate return.

Some deposits are made quietly, in relationships, values, time, impact and the stories we are creating through ordinary days.

We may only understand their true value years later.
