Before You Call Yourself an Accountant, Read This
Everyone loves the title. Accountant. It sounds powerful. Respected. Secure.
But here is the uncomfortable question you must ask yourself quietly.
Are you really an accountant, or are you just holding the title?
A degree alone does not make you an accountant. Many people with accounting certificates are only recording history.
They are bookkeepers, not advisors. And there is nothing wrong with that. But do not confuse the two.
A real accountant does more than record and present numbers.
A real accountant understands them. Interprets, questions, warns, and guide.
Most people read financial statements like this.
βThe institution made profit.β
βAssets increased.β
βCash improved.β
Flat. Safe. Empty.
No insight. No direction. No value.
Great accountants read financial statements differently.
They look for risk.
They look for impact.
They ask what could go wrong.
They ask what management must do next.
Every time you read a financial statement, discipline yourself to think this way:
What is the overall condition?
What is driving performance?
Where is the biggest risk hiding?
What must management watch closely?
Example:
βThe bank is profitable and financially stable, driven mainly by interest income. However, performance is highly dependent on loan quality and cash recovery. If repayment slows, liquidity and growth will come under pressure. Management should closely monitor credit risk and operating cash flow.β
That is the difference.
That is the line between a title and a profession.
So before you proudly call yourself an accountant, ask yourself honestly.
Can you read risk?
Can you explain impact?
Can you guide decisions?
Because accounting is not for those who memorize figures.
It is for those who think, interpret, and lead.
