Many of my friends asked me, โ€œHow did Hao Rui learn about Halloween parties?โ€

Wellโ€ฆ I dug the hole and jumped into it myself. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Whenever a festive season approaches, I buy books related to it and read them with him, be it Chinese New Year, birthdays, Christmas, Halloween

Before we travel, I also introduce books about aeroplanes, airports, farms or animals, depending on what we might encounter during the trip.

My intention is simple: when he sees the real thing, he can connect it to something we have read together.

An airport becomes more than a place we pass through. An animal becomes more than a picture on a page. He recognises something familiar, gets excited and starts asking questions.

Iโ€™ve noticed that when learning connects to an experience, it becomes more enjoyable for him, and easier to remember.

Of course, sometimes he remembers the party part a little too well. ๐Ÿคฃ

This has also made me reflect on the mentoring process.

When someone is exploring a career, we can explain the role, describe the opportunities and share everything we think they should know. Yet they may still struggle to picture themselves doing the work.

Sometimes, they need an experience to connect the dots.
A real conversation. An opportunity to observe. A small task to try, with someone beside them to guide them and reflect afterwards.

In family wealth planning, for example, listening to a clientโ€™s concerns can bring meaning to concepts that previously felt abstract. You begin to understand why a question matters, why a family hesitates, and how much responsibility comes with their trust.

During the process, Iโ€™m learning that what feels obvious to me may be completely unfamiliar to someone else.
The experience can help me guide them, and I also need the patience to let them discover, ask and make sense of things at their own pace.

Perhaps that is part of growing wiser: learning how to make our experience useful to another person.

One day, while I was out with my husband and son, we walked past a roadshow.

Watching the people approach passers-by, I casually said, โ€œWah, so tough...โ€

I remembered doing roadshows during my banking days, more than 20 years ago. It wasnโ€™t easy, and it was certainly not something I enjoyed. Having experienced it myself, I could relate to how demanding it could feel.

My husbandโ€™s response caught me by surprise.

โ€œWhatโ€™s tough for them? They chose this path. They know this is part of what theyโ€™ll be doing. If they really want it, they just gladly have to do all that comes with it.โ€

His words were direct, but they gave me something to think about.

I was looking at their work through the memory of my own discomfort. Yet I didnโ€™t know how they felt. Some might find it tiring. Some might enjoy meeting people. Others might see it as a worthwhile part of building the career they want.

Recently, I came across the phrase โ€œchosen struggleโ€, and it brought me back to that conversation.

When we choose a career, we usually think about what attracts us: the purpose, the opportunities, the flexibility, or the life we hope to build.

But that choice also comes with responsibilities, uncertainty and tasks we may never particularly enjoy.

Building my own family wealth planning practice has taught me this too. I value the relationships I build with families and the opportunity to help them make thoughtful decisions. Alongside that comes the responsibility of finding and building investors, managing a business and continuing to show up when progress feels slow.

And yes, there are still days when it feels difficult.

But remembering why I chose this work helps me decide what I am willing to keep working through.

Choosing something doesnโ€™t mean we will always feel motivated, or that we lose the right to say, โ€œThis is hard.โ€ We can acknowledge the difficulty, seek support and improve the way we work.

For me, the deeper question is whether the effort still serves something I care about.

That is also a question worth asking when considering a career:

How do you choose a career when you have plenty of information, but still cannot picture what working in it would be like?

During a mentoring conversation, a young woman shared that she was struggling to decide on her career direction.

She did not know what the working environment would be like. There was so much information available that she felt overwhelmed. With each new piece of advice, choosing seemed to become harder.

Her sharing made me reflect on how we guide young adults.

We encourage them to research and explore. But reading about a profession can only tell us so much. It is harder to understand the daily responsibilities, the culture, and the challenges until we speak to people doing the work or experience it ourselves.

It also helps to have a clearer understanding of what we are looking for. Otherwise, every option can sound promising, and every opinion can pull us in a different direction.

For young adults thinking about their careers, these are a few questions worth putting down on paper:

Learning, stability, income, flexibility, meaningful work? Which matters most at this stage, and which is non-negotiable?

What do people usually approach me for? Which experiences or achievements have helped me recognise my strengths?

Writing both down can help separate our own interests from other peopleโ€™s expectations.

Is it the daily work, the environment, the expectations, or the opportunities to grow? A specific question is easier to investigate than โ€œIs this career right for me?โ€

A conversation with someone in the field, job shadowing, or an internship can help us turn assumptions into experience.

I hope young adults can give themselves that same room to learn. You can take your career seriously without expecting yourself to know your entire future today.

Thank you to SIM Career Connect and the National Youth Council for the opportunity to mentor and contribute to these conversations.

As a mother, this also reminds me to be patient with my sonโ€™s discovery process: to listen, help him ask questions, and give him space to form his own understanding.

If youโ€™re exploring a career in family wealth planning and would like to understand what the work is like, Iโ€™m more than happy to share my experience, from the day-to-day responsibilities, the challenges, and what I find meaningful about it.

At 24, I was already earning well into the upper four figures each month, more than I had expected at that stage of my career.
I knew I was in a fortunate position. Work was going well. I had a good boss. I was progressing.
And truthfully,
Perhaps that's what made the decision so difficult.
It's probably easier to walk away when something is clearly wrong.

Yet I found myself at a crossroads; stay on a path that was comfortable and familiar, or move into a Family Wealth Consultant role.

On paper, staying made sense. But not everything that shapes a career can be measured on paper. There was someone who had guided me tremendously during that season of my life. Interestingly, many of the things he taught me had very little to do with financial planning.
He taught me about life. How I dealt with people. How I approached difficult moments.
Somewhere along the way, I had also made him a promise. And
So I chose to move on. Not because I was unhappy. Not because I was looking for a better income.

Looking back now, I realise how much that decision shaped the years that followed.

We often evaluate a career opportunity by looking at the role, the income, the progression and the benefits.
And of course, all these things matter.

But after all these years, Iโ€™ve learnt to value another question just as much:

Who might I become if I spend the next few years learning and building?

And sometimes, you only understand the value of that many years later.

I certainly didn't know at 24 where that decision would eventually take me. I just knew there was a promise, a person, and a passion worth taking a chance on. And I'm glad I did.

Home is more than the house we return to every night. It is the familiar sights, sounds, food, people and little traditions that somehow become part of who we are. And perhaps becoming a parent makes the word home mean even more.

Singapore is no longer just the place where I grew up. It is also the place where my child is growing up; where his childhood memories are being created, where he will form friendships, discover the world and, one day, have his own stories to tell about this place.

We may sometimes complain about the pace of life, the costs, the crowds and all the things we wish could be better. But gratitude doesn't mean pretending everything is perfect. It means remembering that amidst all of that, we have a place we belong to.

A place whose little quirks feel familiar.
A place we miss when we're away.
A place that, no matter how far we travel, we instinctively call home.
And perhaps that's something worth being deeply grateful for.

May our children grow up not only enjoying what Singapore has given them, but also learning to appreciate it, care for it, and make it an even better home for those who come after them ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌโค๏ธ

One thing that continues to surprise me is this. Some of the most fulfilled people I've met aren't necessarily the most successful. And some of the most successful people I've met are still searching for something more. For a long time, I thought those two would eventually meet. That if I kept working hard enough... Achieved enough...
Reached enough milestones... Fulfilment would naturally follow.

Life has taught me that it doesn't always work that way.
Success often comes from achieving the goals we've set for ourselves. Fulfilment comes from living a life that's aligned with the person we've become.

The two can exist together. But one doesn't automatically lead to the other.

Different people are at different stages of their careers.
Some were just starting out. Some had built successful businesses. Some had reached positions that many people would aspire to. Yet regardless of where they were, one conversation surfaced more often than I expected.
"I know I'm doing well... but I don't know if this is still what I want."
That isn't a sign of failure. Sometimes it's a sign that you've grown.

The career that challenged you ten years ago may not be the career that inspires you today. The definition of success that motivated you at 25 may no longer be the definition that gives you fulfilment at 40.
And that's okay

We shouldn't expect ourselves to remain the same person throughout our lives.
Why should we expect our careers to?
Maybe the real question isn't whether you've been successful.
Maybe it's whether your career is still helping you become the person you want to be.

One of the things that makes Singapore special isn't just the food, it's also where we enjoy it.

At a hawker centre, you'll see people from all walks of life sharing the same space. Families gathering over dinner, friends catching up, office workers on their lunch break, and seniors enjoying their morning kopi.

More importantly, these places remind us that some of life's best moments are found around a simple table, shared with the people we care about.

Today, I'm grateful for this uniquely Singaporean culture that brings people together, one meal at a time. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

A question I've been asking myself recently.. and I would like to hear from you tooโ€ฆ
If you were graduating today, with everything you know now, would you still choose the same career?
Not because your current job is bad.
Not because your company isn't treating you well.
But because you're no longer the same person who made that decision years ago.

When we first started our careers, many of us chose based on what seemed sensible at the time.
A stable job. Arecognised profession. A clear career path.
Perhaps that's exactly what we needed then. But life has a way of changing us. The experiences we go through. The people we meet. The responsibilities we take on. The challenges that shape us.

Slowly, our definition of success begins to evolve.
I've realised that one of the biggest career questions isn't, "Am I successful?"
It's, "Does my work still reflect the person I've become?"

Over the years, I've had the privilege of sitting down with hundreds of individuals and families. Many conversations began with finances. But they often ended somewhere completely different.

We spoke about purpose. About time. About family. About wanting to make a meaningful contribution. About wondering whether they still had the courage to begin a new chapter. Those conversations didn't just shape them. They quietly reshaped me too.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing reflections on work, purpose, leadership and the lessons I've learnt, not because I have all the answers, but because I believe the best career conversations often begin with a simple question.

So here's mine for you:
If you were starting your career again today, what is one thing you would refuse to compromise on?

One of the things I love most about Singapore is that nature is never too far away.

Whether it's a morning walk, an evening jog, or watching children play, our parks offer a place to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with what matters.
In the midst of a busy city, I'm grateful that we have so many green spaces to enjoy.

Counting down to National Day ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

Starting a simple gratitude series.
Sometimes, the smallest things remind us how blessed we are to call Singapore home.

A simple cup of kopi. Easy to find and somehow always comforting. Itโ€™s only when weโ€™re overseas that we realise how much we miss this familiar taste of home.

Today, Iโ€™m thankful for this little everyday privilege that makes Singapore feel like Singapore. โค๏ธโ˜•๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ
