Yesterday, we announced that people with a history of allergies can now safely take Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines (both mRNA) and that Sinovac will be offered for free for those who cannot take the mRNA vaccines or for specific medical reasons. Many have asked these questions.
1️⃣ Is the Sinovac vaccine free to everyone who opt for it? How will the government reimburse me for the vaccination fee?
Only if you were previously rejected from taking the mRNA vaccines because you had severe allergies or were allergic to the first dose. You can go to any of the approved private clinics to get vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine for free. It will be hassle-free and you do not need to pay.
For all other individuals who prefer Sinovac for non-medical reasons, it will be a private arrangement with the vaccine provider, and will have to pay an admin fee to the private providers.
2️⃣ If Sinovac is safe enough to be allowed for use, under the Special Access Route (SAR), why is it not part of the national vaccination programme and covered by the Vaccine Injury Financial Assistance Programme (VIFAP)?
These are two separate decisions.
For vaccines to come under the national vaccination programme, it has to go through a rigorous evaluation of its safety and efficacy. From global and local data, both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines met these criteria. We are still awaiting some outstanding data on the Sinovac vaccine to complete our evaluation.
In the meantime, we will put the Sinovac vaccine under the Special Access Route, so that private providers can draw on our existing stock to administer to individuals who wish to have it.
3️⃣ What about those who had severe adverse reactions after their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine? Can they opt for other vaccines on the SAR?
Yes, there are some 2,000 individuals in this category. They should not receive an mRNA vaccine again.
To protect them against COVID-19, we are also evaluating other suitable non-mRNA vaccines. We expect to make such vaccines available before the end of this year for use in our national vaccination programme, after the vaccines have been rigorously assessed and approved by the HSA. However, if this group of individuals are unable to wait for the alternative non-mRNA vaccines, they can consider taking non-HSA authorised vaccines under the SAR such as Sinovac.
