Once again, e)mission has been invited to submit an offset proposal to contribute to the carbon accountability of CTT, Portugal's mail company, with its CTT Expresso product line.
The project helps preserve Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) in Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil) while reducing carbon emissions by supporting fuel switching in a cluster of ceramics industries. Traditionally they were using fossil fuels in the furnaces, and the project adapted the furnaces and trained staff to use wood waste and residue from sustainable forestry and timber industry nearby, thereby using a waste product and avoiding not only the fossil fuels CO2 emissions, but also avoiding methane emissions from rotting wood waste.

In order to stay under the Paris Agreement´s target of 1.5ºC of warming, annual emissions in 2030 would need to be 28 billion tonnes lower than what countries´plans and pledges deliver ahead of the global Climate Change Conference (CoP26), in a few days´ time.
We won´t achieve objectives based on countries´ political promises alone.

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) released its preliminary reports under the 6th Reporting framework in August.
Even in the most optimistic scenarios, global surface temperature is increasing beyond safe points. Read the "Climate Change 2021 - The Physical Science Basis - Summary for Policymakers". Sobering reading packed into only 41 pages.

The recent major IPCC report makes absolutely clear our urgent need for meaningful action to both drastically reduce emissions, and prepare for a fast changing climate.
The visible effects of climate change-induced extreme events are easy to see on the news - droughts, flooding, intensity of storms.
But its also what we cannot see which is most alarming….

September 2020 - the warmest September globally since record-keeping began.
The absolute need to drive down carbon emissions using every available, viable technology, as well as reinforcing the capacity of natural eco-systems to maintain, and indeed increase, the carbon sink potential, has never been greater.
UPDATE: September 2020 was the warmest September globally since modern record-keeping began in 1880, measuring at 1.0 °C (1.8 °F) above the 1951-1980 baseline average. The eight most recent Septembers have also been the warmest.

In addition to State actors and the Business Community, naturally individuals and society at large have important roles to play, as consumers and electorate.
But also, and so importantly, as lobbyists to demand urgent and meaningful leadership by policy makers, as young people all around the world demonstrated yesterday, and will again in days to come.
There´s an important role for all to play.
Let´s do it.
