VUL nga ba ay isang investment?

Tapusin ang video. Wag agad magpapaniwala sa napapanood online. Aralin muna bago magdecide financially.

11/04/2026

(Well, mali na agad ang argument kasi VUL isn't suppose to serve as an investment, unlike Mutual funds/UITF).

Pero let us talk about Management fees.

Ano ito?
Bayad sa Fund Managers for managing the funds.

Nagcreate na ako ng post about fund managers. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Gm93NJPK9/

Magkano ba ang management fees?
Mutual funds - 1.0% to 2.5%
UITF - 0.5% to 2.0%
VUL's funds - 1.5% to 2.5%

Let's use one fund.
ATRAM Global Technology Feeder Fund.

(Daily rate. So 2.00%/365 days). Tapos doon nila cocomputein ang value per unit. Then, saka nila ipupublish yung NAVPU or Net asset value per unit.

So bakit nga ba mas mataas?
Kung nag-open ka ng UITF, for your personal account, compare mo ito sa pangmaramihang accounts na inoopen ng Insurance company clients. May personal tagging yan. Per policy.
Per policy, merong iba't ibang funds na pipiliin.
Ibat ibang allocation.
At ibat ibang amount.
Merong 3,000 per month.
Iba-iba rin ng timing.
Merong monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual.

Buying units pa lang yan.

Wala pa ang Selling units.
Ano yun? Ibebenta automatically yung portion ng units for that. Selling transaction.
Automatic yun.

You stand on the perspective of the fund manager. Let's say, ATRAM.

Yung mga binanggit ko sa taas, would you charge the same management fee kung may added tasks sayo?

Ibig sabihin, may another layer ng babayaran.

Now, let's dig it deeper.
Sa VUL, yung fund is called PRULINK GLOBAL TECH NAVIGATOR FUND.

It invests in ATRAM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY FEEDER FUND.

So it's actually 2 layers kung iisipin.
Layer 1: ATRAM UITF (charges 1.17%)
Layer 2: PRULINK GLOBAL TECH FUND (invests in layer 1. Had more tasks, integrating into the insurance systems)

So mas mataas sya.

Kasi kung hindi gagawin,
You invest to pure ATRAM UITF. Then, you manually SELL your units EQUIVALENT to the charges for the month. Repeat it for 10 years.

By the way, how much ba ang difference?
2.0% - 1.17% = 0.83%

So if you have 100k fund value, that is 830 per year. 69 pesos per month.

This post is not to compare Term insurance and investing the difference vs VUL.
Iba ang computation doon. May post na rin ako doon.

I just explained here how fund management fee works.

Term insurance, VUL, Whole Life, Endowment.

Term Insurance - Traditional type, pay as you use. Pwede ka macover hanggang limited years lang, hindi hanggang 100 years old. And you have to pay them always. If want mo macover until 60 years old, pay the premiums until 60 years old.

VUL - Insurance with investment components. You pay the premiums, kaltasan ng charges, may maiiwang fund value. Which in turn, this fund value will cover the future charges. Insured ka normally hanggang age 100, and if you want macover until that time, you have to maintain paying the charges.

Whole Life - Insured ka habambuhay, until age 100. The charges will be compressed and you have to pay them normally ng 5,10,15,20 years. Ang tawag dyan, limited-pay Whole Life Insurance. May Cash value, dividends, payout.

Endowment - Insured ka for a limited period like 20 years. Then you can pay it in 5 or 10 years. May Cash value, dividends, payout.

Ituro ko na rin yung payment terms. Merong 3 types.
Single pay, Limited pay, Regular pay.

Tumutukoy ito sa PREMIUM PAYMENT PERIOD.
Paano mo babayaran or huhulugan ang premiums.

Single pay - one time hulugan
Limited pay - 5,7,10,15,20 years to pay
Regular pay - designed bayaran until maturity (end of coverage)

So ang kumpletong tawag sa mga plans,
Payment terms + Insurance type

Sample:
Limited-pay VUL
Regular-pay Whole Life Plan
Limited-pay Endowment

Premium – Ito yung hinuhulog mo

Sample.

Term insurance. You pay premiums hanggat gusto mong macover. Wala. Walang fund value, cash value. Walang matitira sa hulog mo.

VUL. You pay premiums.
May maiiwan.

Since magkaiba ang Premiums at charges, need itong maintindihan ng clients.

Sample, VUL plan ang kinuha mo. Limited-pay VUL. 10 years to pay VUL.
Anong meaning nyan?
10 years ang premium payment terms.
Next mong tanong, hanggang anong age ka ba covered nyan? 100 years old daw. So maturity period or benefit period is up to 100 years old.

Tanong: Ang 10 years VUL ba, 10 years to pay lang Talaga?
Hindi. Bakit? Kasi ang premiums, oo, 10 years to pay. Pero ang charges, lifetime until maturity benefit (100 years old).

After 10 years, may fund value ka. Duty nyan is maging insurance fund mo. If it can sustain the charges, buhay ang insurance mo. If not, terminated na ang insurance mo.

Why? Because you can no longer pay the charges.

Same sa term insurance, if you can no longer sustain the charges, terminated ang policy.

So hindi ko masasabi kung until when ka magbabayad ng premium. If you look at the contract, follow it. If 10 years to pay, bayaran for 10 years pero please understand na you have to maintain the charges. You have to “pay” the charges.

If you want that, get a traditional whole life plan.

It is a matter of how you want to pay your entire charges.

So if you have 10-years to pay VUL, how to know hanggang kelan ka magbabayad.
1. Monitor your fund value always. Pag paubos na, magtop up.
2. Check the fund transaction history to see how much are the actual charges na kinakaltas so you can estimate future charges. Para magtira sa fund value ng enough to cover the charges.

Madalas ko sinasabi sa mga videos and articles na ang VUL ay more on insurance, and not investment.

For sure magtatanong ang marami, "e bakit pa sinabing insurance with investment kung hindi rin naman pala yan tutubo?"

Before we answer that, himayin ko yung VUL.

VUL - Variable Universal Life
Or Variable Unit-Linked insurance plan.

Ang tawag yan ay hybrid product.
Insurance plan with investment component na mas kilala bilang fund value.

Ang format kasi nyan, mostly ganito:
Premiums ➡️ Premium charge ➡️ Fund Value ➡️ Insurance charge

VUL is just one type of life insurance according sa structure.
Merong Term insurance, Traditional whole life, at endowment.

"Fuel" kumbaga.
Lifeblood ng policy.

Without it, wala nang paghuhugutan ang charges. So mateterminate ang policy.

Lagi kong ginagamit na analogy ito:

Let's say you are spending 200 pesos per day for a cup of coffee.
If naglalagay ka ng 500 pesos sa loob ng coffee card mo everyday, at nagkakape ka for 200 pesos a day, may maiiwan dyan sa account mo.

In case wala ka nang pera panghulog, or panggastos sa kape, guess what, makakapagcoffee ka pa rin.

Kasi may laman pa ang account mo.

Same way sa VUL. The fund value serves as backup fund. Kapag wala ka nang income in the future, hindi ka basta basta mateterminatean ng insurance.

So sa simula pa lang, dapat mong i-view ang VUL as a WHOLE PRODUCT.

Isipin mong kada hulog mo ngayon ng premium, covered ka THIS MONTH and 10 years from now. Isipin mong 2 buwan yung macocover noon.

At may mga taong ganyan ang gusto.
Ayaw nila ng pay as you use. Ganun kasi ang term insurance.

Oo, mura sa simula. Pero if matagal na yan, mataas na ang babayaran, paano kung wala ka palang naitabi man lang na fund for your insurance.

There comes the problem. Mapipilitan kang masacrifice at materminate ang insurance mo.

There are people nga actually na gustong bayaran na lahat ng lifetime charges in just 5 years e.

So, the next time you see the word VUL, take note that it is ENTIRELY an insurance plan.
With flexibility features.
Yun ang fund value. Yes, in form, investment sya. Like equity or bonds.

Pero in substance? Insurance sya.

Ang goal ng Investment ay INSURANCE.

Pwede ba yun?

Oo.

Same way sa stock market.

Hindi yan designed to act for income growth.
Oo, gusto natin palaguin, pero for what purpose? For it to be available for insurance charges.

So since ang purpose ng fund value mo sa VUL is to sustain the policy, how do we assess kung okay sya or not?

1. Check the actual fund performance. Yun ang magsasabi if tumaas or bumaba.

Total premiums paid for your VUL
vs
Insurance benefits + Fund value

Kasi diba sanay tayo sa word na "projected" meaning, may pinagbasehan sila in the past

I project that the returns will be 10%.

Parang "I project" = "I predict"

Hindi sya ganun.

Meaning lang talaga ng "projected" is,

IF nangyari yung 4%, ganito ang result after deducting the charges.

IF 10% naman, ganito sya

If 8%, ganito.

Ginawa yang table to show you the values of your fund under certain market conditions. Paano yung gains. Paano yung charges.

Pero it does not predict something.
Hindi sya ginawa para gawing basis.

FUND MANAGERS.

1. Ang fund managers ba ay tao lang? Like manager sa company?
Hindi po. They are asset management corporations. Bigyan ko kayo ng example.

EastSpring Investments - one of the top leading Asia-based global asset management
$278 Billion of assets under management
400+ Investment professionals

ATRAM
$300 Billion of assets under management
300+ Investment professionals

2. Ano bang trabaho nila?

3. Paano nila minamanage yung pera?
Pasimplehin ko lang ah.
Example:
Philippine Equity Index Tracker Fund
Top 30 companies or tinatawag na Index funds or Blue chips.

4. Paano ito nakonekta sa VUL?
Ang funds ng VUL or Variable Universal Life na insurance plans kasi ay kabilang sa tinatawag na C.I.S or Collective Investment Scheme.
Kabilang sa C.I.S ang Mutual funds at UITF.

Pooled funds sila.

Huh? Bakit oo at hindi.
Oo, kasi INDIRECTLY, they are the one na nag-mamanage nung mga funds.

6. Have you heard of Stock brokers? Anong pinagkaiba nila?

Magkaiba sila ah. Pero related somehow.

Stock broker - ito yung like ColFinancial.
Sila taga execute ng buy and sell orders mo.

Fund manager - sila nagccreate ng funds and also may strategies sila.

Pero bottomline, when you decide as the owner of your funds, you take all risks. Kapag bumaba yan, bababa yan, ikaw malulugi. Wala silang share.
Ganun rin if tumubo.

First answer, hindi sya pure investment ah. May charges para sa insurance.
Pero if you focus on the fund performance ng funds nito, hindi lahat lugi.

(Kaya I find it funny kasi grabe parang hindi nanoood ng video).

There are positive perdorming funds. There are negative.

Check the website. Fund fact sheets. Fund commentaries. Weekly notes. Video explanations.
Meron po.

And mas trabaho yan ng agent.

May isang nagcomment. Read that then read this long article I made about it.

In response to her comment:
Idk kung ano ginawa sayo ng agent.
But that is required by insurance commission to all insurance providers na maglagay ng projected fund value under certain conditions such as 4% and 10%

Walang sinabi na, yung mangyayari is either 4% or 10%.

Walang sinabi na hindi pwedeng bumaba sa 4%. Walang guarantee ang investment.

I think dapat alam na to ng lahat ng Pilipino by now.

Kasi nga may charges na binabayaran.

Pero it can happen. If mataas ang fund performance, your fund gain can be greater than the charges.

I have created an article before pa, you may read them here:

When you hear that from your agent, RUN.

Not guaranteed - sa investment, the higher the risk, the higher the return, and vice versa.

Pero make sure to clarify sa agent mo kung net of charges and taxes na yan.

Lower end is 4%. Higher end is 10%.

E what if 10%. Ayan. Nandyan yan.

Pero pwede ba mas bumaba sa 4%?
Pwede ba mas tumaas sa 10%

Oo. Gano ka-likely mangyari? Please, do in-depth research dito.

Here are some tips for you as a client para ikaw sa sarili mo, makapag-assess ka:

1. Ask your agent to show you the Actual Fund Performance. Historical performance. Tingnan mo doon. Assess mo.

2. Do research sa future economic situation.

3. Mag-aral ng technical and fundamental analysis para medyo nagegets ang mga financial instruments like Bonds, stocks, index, etc.

Magpatulong sa mga agent. Dapat marunong sila nyan.

Again, this post is to remind clients to be mindful of their policies na kukunin.

Financial instruments:
Stocks
Bonds
Mutual funds
UITF
Coop funds
Treasurt bills
Savings
Peer-to-peer investment funding

Non-financial instruments:
Real property
Business
Jewelries, gold, watches

Dami pa.

It takes me 1hour to shoot, edit, and post a video content here on Facebook.

I try to explain insurance (and hopefully finance in general soon) in an educational way.

Marami pa ring hateful comments because of the nature of the content I discuss. A lot of people hate VUL and insurance. And they have valid reasons. But most often, because they are misinformed.

Opo, ulitin ko. Kaya maraming galit kasi hindi nga nila alam. And I get it. Kung ano man ang rason noon, so be it. Kung yan ay dahil sa agents na palpak, by all means, blame them.

Kaya nga may ganitong posts. Kung saan naririnig yung saloobin nyo. Yung frustrations nyo.

Araw araw, napakaraming message sa inbox ko.
Para na nga akong si Tulfo.

Nakakastress din ha.
Pero okay lang. I love what I do.

Commission pa more"

Guys, wala pa akong closed client this year 😅 not a proud thing to say, though I have my reasons naman. I spent most of my time doing other things (that I like also by the way)

Even monetization, mababa lang. Barya lang.

I am doing this because of these kinds of messages.

That's why, tuloy lang.

Curious question.

Kapag nag-claim na sa VUL or any insurance, that's the only time na mag-aagree tayong lahat na hindi lugi sa kinuhang insurance.

Kapag kinelangan dahil sa critical illness.
Or kapag nakuha na ng beneficiary yung millions of claims.

Well, that's true naman.

Kasi VUL is an insurance plan.

But we don't want people to experience these things para lang magets ang point ng insurance.

Konting tyaga sana sa pag-aaral.
Give time in understanding the plan before getting it.

At sa mga ahente, aral aral rin.
At sa mga nagsheshare ng knowledge online,
Konting patience pa.

Konti pa.
