Ngayong taon, umpisahan natin ang awareness mo kung saan napupunta ang iyong 13th month pay.
Here are some of the helpful advise kung saan mo dapat ilagay ang iyong extra cash.
1. Build the "Emergency Fund"
The most crucial allocation is to a dedicated emergency fund.
Allocate a significant portion (ideally 30% to 50%) to a high-yield savings account or time deposit that is separate from your daily transaction account. (may alam akong time deposit that guarantees 5% net gains yearly)
Aim to build a fund that can cover 3 to 6 months of your total monthly expenses. This serves as your safety net.
2. Settle High-Interest Debts (Utang)
If you have any outstanding debts, especially those with high interest rates like credit card balances, informal loans ("5/6" or "utang" sa bumbay), or short-term personal loans, settling them should be a top priority.
The holiday season can lead to more debt. Use the 13th month pay to start the new year "utang-free" or with a much lighter load.
3. Invest in a Future Fund (The "Future Self" Allocation)
Once your emergency fund is healthy and high-interest debts are managed, you can allocate money towards long-term growth.
Set aside 20% to 30% for investments. This could be into:
VUL/Traditional Insurance: Kung wala ka pa, kailangan mo to. Meron din may guaranteed returns up to 10%.
PAG-IBIG MP2 Program: Low-risk option for Filipinos with historically high dividend rates.
Stock Market: For higher potential returns (if you understand the risks).
This allocation is key for your future self, helping you fund your retirement, a child's education, or a big purchase like a house ("sariling bahay").
4. Budget for "Joy" and Holiday Spending (Be Intentional)
The 13th month pay is often called "Christmas bonus," and it's important to allow for some enjoymentโpero yung afford lang natin dapat.
Allocate a fixed, responsible amount (e.g., 5% to 15%) for:
Gifts ("Regalo") for family
Noche Buena/Media Noche expenses.
A Well-Deserved Treat (e.g., a small family trip or a personal item).
Do not use the money intended for your emergency fund or investments for holiday expenses.
Ikaw, saan mapupunta ang 13th month pay mo?
