Aftershocks are still happening, let's take control by being ready. Here is what to prepare to keep your family safe. Keep it simple and mobile.
Keep this right by the door for quick access.
3 days supply (1 gallon per person, per day).
Canned goods, biscuits, energy bars, and instant noodles.
Flashlight with extra batteries (or a rechargeable light), plus a fully charged power bank and mobile phones (expect power and internet outages).
First aid kit and any essential daily medications for your family.
Whistle (to call for help if trapped), dust mask, gloves, and a small multi-tool.
Copies of IDs and cash in small bills, kept in a waterproof pouch.
Light blanket or jacket (nights get cold outdoors).
Minimize hazards where you spend the most time.
Practice this with your kids so the reaction becomes automatic.
๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ณ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐: Pick 2 safe spots per roomโunder sturdy tables and away from windows or glass.
Fasten bookshelves, TVs, and water dispensers to the wall (L-brackets help immensely).
Keep a glass of water on a table to easily visually check if a real aftershock is happening.
Turn off gas and electricity immediately if you smell gas or see sparks after a shake.
Local lines often jam, so plan ahead.
Pick one trusted person outside the region that everyone checks in with. Long-distance texts usually go through when local calls fail.
Teach your kids your full legal name and the out-of-town contact's phone number.
Create a group chat with family and neighbors strictly for "Iโm safe" updates.
Taking care of your mind is just as important.
Keep slippers and a flashlight directly under your bed to reduce panic if a quake hits in the dark.
If you feel dizzy or think the ground is moving, sit down, place your feet flat on the floor, drink water, and remind yourself: "I am safe right now."
Having these simple things ready means you wonโt have to scramble next time.
Start small: Focus on building just the go-bag this week. Donโt try to do everything at once.
We are Mindanao Strong, and we will get through this together.
Praying for everyone's safety and recovery. ๐
