The Business Council of Papua New Guinea congratulates Miss Mary Mistil Jerry, our Government to Business & Stakeholder Engagement Officer, on successfully completing and graduating from the Australia–PNG International Trade Training Program.

Delivered by the Institute for International Trade at Adelaide University with support from the Australian Government through APEP, the five-month programme strengthened participants’ knowledge across key areas of international trade policy.

As part of the programme, Mary developed a workplace-based project titled, “Strengthening Private Sector Engagement and Improving Information Sharing in Papua New Guinea’s International Trade Policy Processes.”

The Business Council is proud to support the professional development of its staff and strengthen private and public sector engagement for the benefit of Papua New Guinea’s business community.

At the 8th Futures Forum, Secretary for the PNG Department of ICT Steven Matainaho provided an update on the Government's digital transformation agenda, outlining developments in digital identity, telecommunications reform, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence governance, and digital infrastructure.

Addressing business leaders and stakeholders, Secretary Matainaho highlighted progress on initiatives including SevisPass, SevisWallet and ServiceDEx, which are intended to support trusted digital interactions between citizens, government agencies and private sector organisations.

"The objective is not to digitize an ID. The objective is to build a trust infrastructure and ecosystem," Secretary Matainaho said.

The Secretary also outlined proposed legislation covering verifiable credentials, cybersecurity, data protection and AI, alongside ongoing work on telecommunications reform and national connectivity.

As Papua New Guinea's digital landscape continues to evolve, discussions around trust, interoperability, connectivity and regulatory frameworks remain important considerations for both government and industry.

"PNG businesses are not failing to digitalise — they are being priced and disrupted out of it."

This statement from BCPNG President Susil Nelson-Kongoi captures one of the key challenges facing Papua New Guinea's digital economy today.

The conversation is no longer about whether businesses want to embrace digital transformation. The challenge is creating the conditions that allow them to do so.
