Okay, it's a bit windy. But there are pockets of sunshine out there, and we're choosing to see that as a sign... There's definitely a spring in our step today 😉

The business mood is starting to feel different too. Confidence in New Zealand is at its highest point in years, and after the stretch we've all been through, that's worth celebrating.

We've been thinking about what this moment means for business owners. Not just "things are looking up!" but what to actually do with it.

Halfway through the year.

If you had to pick one thing your business did really well in the first six months of 2026, what would it be?

And, what's the one thing you wish you'd done sooner?

We ask because we have these conversations with clients every day, and the answers are usually more useful than any report. Sometimes saying it out loud is the first step.

We're always here if you want to think through the second half of the year.

Around half of small business invoices in New Zealand are paid late. The average wait is close to 25 days.

Winter makes it worse. Cashflow is already tighter, and slow-paying clients can really bite.

A few things that actually help:

✅ Invoice the day the job is done, not at month end. The clock on getting paid starts when the invoice lands.

✅ Put a payment link on every invoice. One click to pay means it doesn't end up in the "I'll do it later" pile.

✅ Ask for a deposit or stage payments on bigger jobs. Keeps cash moving instead of riding on one invoice at the end.

✅ Set up automatic reminders in Xero. A friendly nudge before and after the due date does the chasing for you.

None of these are hard to set up. And even one of them can make a real difference over winter.

You don't need to be a tech company to get value from AI.

NZ businesses using AI earned around $400,000 more on average last year than those that didn't. And three in four of them spent under $5,000 getting started.

The trick is to start small. Pick one job you quietly dread - drafting a first response, turning meeting notes into an action list - and let the technology take the first pass.

A couple of easy places to start:

✨ The AI features built into Xero can now draft invoices and chase payments.
✨ Tools like Otter.ai or Fireflies.ai can record your meetings and pull out the key points automatically, so you can stay present instead of scrambling to keep up.

This week, pick one task that takes you 30 minutes and see if AI can cut that time in half.

Then we handed the reins over. They got to step into the business owner's shoes and make a decision. Watching them think it through was something else.

What struck us most was how engaged they were. Curious, switched on, full of questions.
