A doctor lost RM558,000 after making 77 transfers into a fake investment scheme.

This reminds us of one important truth:

Being highly educated and earning a good income does not automatically protect us from poor financial decisions or sophisticated scams.

Professionals are often busy. When an opportunity sounds convincing, shows attractive “returns” and is introduced as exclusive, it can be tempting to act quickly.

Before investing, always pause and ask:

• Is the company licensed?
• Can I independently verify the investment?
• Do I truly understand where my money is going?
• Why am I being pressured to transfer more?

Good financial planning is not only about making money. It is also about having a proper decision-making process to protect what you have worked so hard to build.

Sometimes, a second opinion can save you from a very expensive mistake.

RM700,000 EPF money finished in 21 days.

When I first read this story, my reaction was, “How can RM700,000 disappear so quickly?”

The man reportedly used the money to renovate his house, buy a car in cash and pay for his child’s wedding.

After his retirement savings were used up, he reportedly had to work as a supermarket security guard to support himself.

Of course, we don’t know his full story, so I don’t want to judge him.

But this is something all of us should think about.

Many people spend their whole working life focusing on one question:

“How much money do I have in EPF?”

But the more important question is:

“How long can my EPF money support me?”

RM700,000 looks like a lot when it is shown as one big number.

But after retirement, there is no more monthly salary coming in.

That money may need to cover food, bills, medical expenses, emergencies and family needs for another 20 or 30 years.

This is why I always say:

Having savings is not the same as having a financial plan.

Before using your retirement money, separate it into different buckets:

✅ Money for monthly living expenses
✅ Money for medical needs
✅ Money for emergencies
✅ Money for enjoyment and family
✅ Money that must continue growing

You worked many years to build your retirement savings.

Don’t let a few big decisions wipe it out within a short time.

Retirement should give us peace of mind—not force us to start worrying about money all over again.

Successful people don't have more discipline. They have clearer targets.

When your goal is specific, written, and committed to… your mind starts working for you instead of against you.

That's not motivation. That's how the human mind is designed to function.

⚽ The World Cup reminds us of one important lesson:

A team full of star players can still lose without the right game plan.

The same is true for our finances.

Many people have accumulated several “players” over the years:

🏠 Properties
📈 Investments
🛡️ Insurance policies
💳 Loans
💰 Savings and EPF

But owning many financial products does not automatically mean you have a financial plan.

Think of your finances as a football team:

🥅 Your financial goals are the goalpost
Where are you trying to reach—retirement, children’s education, financial freedom or leaving a legacy?

🧤 Your emergency fund is the goalkeeper
It protects you when something unexpected gets through.

🛡️ Insurance is your defence
It protects your family and wealth from major financial setbacks.

⚙️ Cash flow is your midfield
It controls how money moves between income, expenses, savings and debt.

⚡ Investments are your strikers
They help you grow wealth and move closer to your goals.

👫 You and your spouse are the team captains
Both must understand the strategy and play towards the same goals.

📋 A licensed financial planner is the coach
Not there to play the game for you—but to study the whole team, identify weaknesses and build a strategy that works together.

Because buying more financial products is like signing more players.

Financial planning is making sure the entire team is playing in the right formation.

So, here is the question:

Do you have a complete financial game plan—or simply a collection of individual players?

🏠 Own a property in Malaysia but you’re not Malaysian?

Many foreign property owners assume that a will written in their home country is enough.

Sometimes it may still work, but the process can become more complicated for the family.

They may need to deal with documents from different countries, extra legal procedures, more waiting time and higher costs before the property can be transferred or sold.

That’s why having a local Malaysian will for your Malaysian property can make things much clearer.

It helps to:

✅ Clearly state who should inherit the property
✅ Appoint someone to handle the local process
✅ Reduce confusion between different legal systems
✅ Make things easier for your family during a difficult time

A Malaysian will does not mean the property can be transferred immediately. Your family will still need to go through the proper legal process.

But at least they have a clear direction.

If you own assets in more than one country, your wills should also be properly coordinated so that they do not conflict with each other.

Buying a property is one decision.

Planning how it will be passed to your family is another.

Don’t leave your family with a property, but no clear instructions on what to do next.

I was glad to be interviewed by Year 1 Finance and Investment students from Southern University Johor Bahru.

It was encouraging to see young students taking an interest in the real world of finance, advisory, and how financial planning can impact people’s lives beyond just numbers, products, or investments.

As a licensed financial planner, my passion has always been to help working adults gain better financial clarity and confidence when making important financial decisions — whether it is about protection, retirement, cash flow, children’s education, investment, or legacy planning.

Many people are hardworking and responsible, but they may still feel uncertain when it comes to money decisions because they do not have a clear overall picture.

That is why I believe comprehensive financial planning is important.

It helps people see where they are today, understand their gaps, identify possible risks, and make decisions with greater confidence — not based on guessing, fear, or product recommendations alone.

I am also grateful for the opportunity to share more awareness with the next generation of finance students, and I hope more people will understand that financial planning is not only for the wealthy.

It is for anyone who wants to make better decisions for their financial future.

Thank you to the students for the meaningful interview. Wishing all of you the very best in your learning journey and future career in finance.

"My wife is our financial planner."

I hear this quite often.

My response is always the same:

"That's wonderful. But may I ask one question?"

Is she planning your family's finances... or managing the family's money?

There is a difference.

Many husbands and wives are excellent at:

- Paying bills on time.
- Tracking expenses.
- Saving diligently.
- Managing investments.
- Avoiding unnecessary debt.

These are important.

But building a family's financial future requires something more.

A licensed financial planner looks at the entire financial ecosystem, asking questions such as:

• If one spouse passes away tomorrow, can the family continue their lifestyle?

• Are your assets structured to achieve your retirement goals?

• Are you over-insured, under-insured, or simply insured incorrectly?

• Is your investment strategy aligned with your life goals, or just chasing returns?

• Will your estate be distributed according to your wishes?

• Are there tax, debt, or cash flow inefficiencies quietly reducing your wealth every year?

The best athletes in the world still have coaches.

The best companies still hire consultants.

Doctors have their own doctors.

Lawyers hire other lawyers.

Not because they lack knowledge.

Because an independent professional sees blind spots that are difficult to see yourself.

Your spouse should absolutely be your financial partner.

But a licensed financial planner brings structure, objectivity, experience, and an independent perspective to help both of you make better decisions together.

Your family's future is too important to rely on assumptions.

Sometimes, one professional conversation today can prevent years of expensive mistakes tomorrow.

Question for you:

If your family's financial future is worth millions over your lifetime, shouldn't important decisions be reviewed by someone professionally trained to see the whole picture?

(Medical Card)

(Critical Illness)

(Personal Accident)

(Life Insurance)
