This smile is my Jammu & Kashmir. ❤️
During the early 1990s, when Jammu & Kashmir was burning with violence and brutal killings, I was only six years old. Looking back today, I often wonder how much of that tragedy was shaped by politics. That is my personal reflection.
As a child, I saw fear without asking anyone’s religion.
I saw Muslims die.
I saw Hindus die.
But what stayed with me forever wasn’t the violence.
It was Abdul Chacha’s love for my family, and my father’s respect for him until his very last breath.
Years later, I captured this beautiful smile in my homeland.
Whenever the country argues about religion, I look at this photograph and remember…
This is the India I know.
Before hashtags, before television debates, before people divided us into identities, we knew each other simply as neighbours.
I grew up with Abdul Chacha’s kindness and my father Ram’s lifelong friendship with him. They never asked who was a better Hindu or a better Muslim.
They only taught me how to become a better human being.
Today, when protests and opinions fill our screens, I choose to remember this smile from my homeland.
Humanity was never the problem. Hatred was.
We don’t need another debate about whose God is greater.
We need more children who can smile like this, without fear.
I belong to the mountains of Jammu & Kashmir. My childhood was surrounded by people who chose love before labels and humanity before hatred.
Don’t let politics make us forget the people who once called each other family.
