The Retail market in India is estimated to reach US$ 1.1 trillion by 2020 from US$ 840 billion in 2017, with FMCG sector expected to grow at CAGR of 27.86% which is likely to boost revenues of the sector from US$ 52.75 billion in FY18 to US$ 103.7 billion in 2020. The sector witnessed growth of 16.5 % in value terms between Jul-Sep 2018; supported by moderate inflation, increase in private consumption and rural income. Growing awareness, easier access and changing lifestyles are the key growth drivers for the consumer market. Demand for quality goods and services have been going up on rural areas on the back of improved distribution channels of manufacturing and FMCG companies. Also, FMCG companies will have to work with the government to get a framework in place that allows plastic credits across the country.

𝑲𝒆𝒚 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝑺𝑴𝑬𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒔?

𝑬𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉:

1) Ease of doing business & efficient access to capital and inputs: Credit market inefficiencies due to informational asymmetries and high transaction costs constrain SME access to capital. Hence, it is important to strengthen the underlying financial infrastructure and existing credit schemes on market-based principles so that they improve the efficiency of credit allocation to SMEs.

2) Access to markets: Access to export markets where there is a premium on quality can be especially impactful for SMEs. In Egypt small rug producers export handmade carpets to high-income markets with a profit between 15%-25%.

𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉:

1) Innovation and managerial competencies: There exists a wide range of potential instruments to support SMEs in developing their managerial, technical and innovative capabilities which will address underlying market failures related to informational asymmetries and coordination. Supply-driven approaches such as technology and business advisory extension services are key drivers.

2) Improving the depth of the financial sector: This will provide SMEs access to financial services that are needed to manage liquidity and to also invest long term. Accelerators and incubators targeting high-growth potential firms are key to driving growth.

3) Focus on Young firms with high growth potential: They are the primary job creators in India, so we aim to bring our knowledge of how to increase productivity growth at the firm level while facilitating a better enabling and policy environment to level the playing field for all firms.

Here are two most spectacular images captured from across Asia last week!!!

Civic workers remove dead fish floating at a partially dried up lake in Ambattur, Chennai. Many water bodies in the city are running dry in hot weather.
