Switching funds is not something to do because of a few bad months.

A fund’s performance should be viewed over a longer period and against relevant benchmarks and category peers.

Before switching, investors should also check:

• Exit Load: Some schemes may charge a fee when units are redeemed within a specified period.

• Tax Impact: Redeeming one fund and investing in another can have tax implications.

• Investment Strategy: A change in the fund’s investment approach may affect whether it still fits the intended portfolio.

• Portfolio Overlap: Holding multiple funds with similar stocks may provide less diversification than expected.

The key is to understand the reason for switching, rather than reacting to short-term market movements.

A return number alone doesn’t tell the full story.

Before you compare investments, it’s important to understand that returns can be shown in different ways, and each one answers a different question.

For example:

• Absolute Return shows the total gain or loss over a period.

• CAGR shows the annualised growth of a lump-sum investment. It is useful for comparing investments across different holding periods.

• Trailing Returns show annualised performance over a fixed period ending today, such as 1, 3, or 5 years.

• Rolling Returns measure returns across multiple overlapping periods. They can help you understand consistency across different market conditions.

That’s why the time period and method of calculation matter just as much as the return number itself.

So, before comparing two mutual funds, check:

✔ Same return metric
✔ Same time period
✔ Relevant benchmark
✔ Consistency of performance

A higher return number isn’t automatically a better comparison.

Always understand what the number actually represents before making a decision.

The five profiles are not a ranking from best to worst.

They simply represent different levels of comfort with investment risk.

A few factors can influence a risk profile:

Investment horizon: Longer time horizons may provide more room to handle market fluctuations.

Financial goals: Different goals can require different approaches to risk.

Risk capacity: Your financial situation can affect how much risk you can reasonably take.

Risk tolerance: This reflects how comfortable you are with market ups and downs.

Portfolio mix: Equity, debt, hybrid and other investments carry different levels of risk.

Your risk profile can also change as your goals, financial situation, or time horizon change.

Risk profiling is a starting point, not a guarantee of investment outcomes.

It should be considered along with the characteristics and risks of individual investments.

A mutual fund’s NAV is simply the per-unit value of its portfolio.

It is calculated based on the value of the fund’s assets, after adjusting for liabilities and expenses.

Here’s another important point:

The number of units you own does not determine your profit.

Your investment value depends on how much you invest and how the fund’s underlying investments perform.

So, don’t compare funds based only on their NAV.

Look at factors like:

• Investment objective
• Portfolio composition
• Performance consistency
• Risk level
• Expense ratio

A ₹10 NAV does not make a fund cheaper.

And a ₹500 NAV does not make it expensive.

The NAV number alone tells you very little about future performance.

So, also focus on the fund’s fundamentals, not its price tag.

₹1 crore today may not buy the same things years from now.

That’s the impact of inflation.

As prices rise, the purchasing power of your money gradually falls.

This becomes especially important when planning for long-term goals such as retirement, education, or financial growth.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Inflation compounds too

Even moderate annual inflation can significantly increase the cost of goods and services over long periods.

• Your personal inflation may differ

Healthcare, education, housing, and lifestyle expenses may rise at different rates.

• Cash alone may lose purchasing power

Money that grows slower than inflation may become less valuable in real terms.

• Long-term investing can matter

Investments with the potential to generate returns above inflation can help address the impact of rising prices.

However, market-linked returns are not guaranteed.

The numbers shown above are an illustration assuming 6% annual inflation. Actual inflation and investment returns can vary.

XIRR stands for Extended Internal Rate of Return.

It is useful when your investment involves multiple cash flows on different dates.

This is why it works well for SIPs.

Each SIP instalment has a different investment date.

So, each instalment stays invested for a different period.

XIRR considers both the amount and timing of every transaction.

It can also be useful for SWPs, additional investments, and partial redemptions.

For a one-time investment, CAGR is generally more appropriate.

For SIPs and multiple cash flows, XIRR can provide a more meaningful annualised return measure.

Growth Option & IDCW are two options available in mutual fund schemes.

Growth Option:

Earnings remain invested in the scheme.

This allows the investment to stay invested and potentially compound over time.

IDCW:

IDCW stands for Income Distribution cm Capital Withdrawal.

Under this option, the scheme may distribute payouts to investors, subject to the scheme’s distributable surplus and applicable conditions.

A few things investors should know:

• IDCW payouts are not guaranteed.
• Payouts can be made monthly, quarterly, yearly or at other intervals, depending on the scheme.
• IDCW payouts are taxable as per the investor’s applicable tax slab.
• Growth option taxation generally arises when units are redeemed, subject to applicable tax rules.
• IDCW payouts can reduce the scheme’s NAV after distribution.

So, the difference is not simply about getting or not getting returns.

It is about how the scheme handles distributions.

Understand the option before investing.
