A MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE

On the passing of: Nanahema Ama Amissah III, Queenmother of Mankessim Traditional Area

Nana,

It is with a heavy heart, but also with the humility that comes from knowing that death spares no one, that I write to convey my deepest condolences to you, the elders of the Nkonkona and Asafo, and the entire people of Oman Kesse, on the passing of our mother, Nanahema Ama Amissah III.

I write not only as a professional and a son of the Fante land, but as a grandson of illustrious houses bound to this coast and beyond. On my mother's side, my lineage carries the blood of the Indigenous peoples of Australia, joined to the house of the late Nana Obuadzii IV of Ekurabandze. On my father's side, I trace my roots to Anomabu, through my grandfather, the very most revered Jacob Benjamin Anaman, who trained the late Dr. Kwegyir Aggrey, founded the Singing Band of the Methodist Church, and was the first Black African to establish a church of his own — the Nigritian Episcopal Church, whose head office today stands at Kumasi-Dichemso. Through these lines, Oman Kesse's joys have always been my joys, and its sorrows are, today, mine as well.

Our elders have long taught us that Owuo nnim ɔhene — death knows no king. It does not pause before a stool, a skin, or a crown; it comes to the palace as freely as it comes to the humblest home. And yet our fathers also remind us, Onipa wu a, na onwui — when a person dies, they are not annihilated. Nanahema's stool, her wisdom, and her motherhood over this land do not end with her passing; they pass into the unseen company of the ancestors who continue to watch over Oman Kesse.

On the passing of: His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, 41st Overlord of Dagbon

Yaa Naa,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to convey my deepest condolences to the Regent, the Kuga Naa and Council of Kingmakers, the Andani Royal Family, and the entire people of Dagbon, on the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II — the Lion of Gbewaa, whose reign brought reconciliation to a kingdom long divided, and whose passing is felt not only in Yendi but across the Northern Region and the whole of Ghana.

I write as a cousin from the Pusiga Palace, whose own household stands within the wider family of peoples bound to this ancient land. My late father, Maclean Jacob Anaman, was the first Principal of the Naa Gbewaa Training College in Pusiga — an institution that bears the very name of the founding ancestor of the Dagbon skins — and it was there, in Pusiga, that I myself served the Government of Ghana in my National Service duty. My bond to this land is therefore not only one of kinship, but of formation, service, and shared history, and my sorrow today joins with that of every home in Dagbon, Kusaug, and beyond.

Our elders across this land have always taught that death is a visitor no household — however great — can turn away. Among the Fante of the south it is said, Owuo nnim ɔhene — death knows no king; it does not pause before a skin or a throne. Among the peoples of Kusaug and the wider Mossi-Dagomba family across the savannah, it has long been understood that a great chief does not simply die — he "goes home," joining the ancestors who first raised the skins of Gbewaa, and from there continues to watch over the peace of his people. His body returns to the soil, but his name is added to the roll of those who ruled wisely and who are called upon in times of need.
