Haven’t signed up for Making Tax Digital yet? HMRC may now do it for you. 👀

From September 2026, HMRC started automatically signing up some sole traders and landlords who should already be using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax but haven't signed up themselves.

If your qualifying income from self-employment and property was over £50,000 in 2024/25, you should already be using MTD from 6 April 2026, unless an exemption applies.

If HMRC signs you up, don't ignore the confirmation. Check your details, make sure your digital records are in order and ensure you're using compatible software.
