Self-employed and wondering why your January tax bill is so high?
It may be because of payments on account.
HMRC is not charging you twice.
You pay your tax bill for the year just finished plus 50% towards next year’s tax bill.
Then the other 50% is due in July.
That money is not extra tax. It is held as credit towards your next Self Assessment bill — so when you file next year, you will only pay the difference left to pay.

If you are self-employed or rent out a property, this is one worth knowing about 👇
From April, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started applying to some people with income over £50,000.
For many, the first quarterly update is due by 7 August.
It sounds more complicated than it is. You are not submitting a full tax return or paying your tax bill in August. It is simply a quarterly update of your income and expenses through accounting software.
If you are not sure whether this applies to you, or you need help getting your bookkeeping ready, send us a message.
We can help you get organised without making it feel overwhelming.

🚨 UK business owners — the tax rules are changing again, and it’s easy to miss something important.
If you’re self-employed, running a limited company, paying CIS workers, or trying to keep on top of VAT… you may already feel like HMRC updates arrive faster than invoices get paid. 😅
A few things worth checking right now:
• Making Tax Digital is expanding, meaning more people will need digital records and compatible software.
• Corporation Tax, VAT and payroll deadlines still need careful planning — especially if cash flow is tight.
• Employers need to stay on top of National Minimum Wage changes, pension duties and payroll reporting.
• If you are taking money from your limited company, the way you pay yourself can make a big difference to your tax bill.
• CIS contractors and subcontractors: incorrect deductions, missing verification or late returns can quickly become expensive.
The biggest mistake we see? Waiting until the deadline is close before looking at the numbers.
Good bookkeeping is not just for HMRC. It helps you know what you can afford, what tax is coming, whether you are making profit and where money is disappearing.
At AYN Accountancy, we help small businesses keep things simple, organised and stress-free — from bookkeeping and VAT to payroll, CIS, self-assessment and limited company accounts.
📩 Send us a message if you want to get your accounts under control before the next deadline catches you out.
