Nobody has all the answers right now.

Not business owners. Not investors. Probably not the people making the rules either.

There is still uncertainty out there, and it is understandable that people feel cautious.

But confidence does not come from knowing exactly what will happen next.

It comes from knowing you have considered the likely scenarios, got the right people around you and put sensible plans in place.

For families, that can mean knowing the mortgage and income are protected.

For business owners, it can mean knowing the company is not exposed if something happens to a key person. For people who have built wealth, it can mean knowing investments, tax planning and future intentions are being looked at together rather than in isolation.

That is what I try to give clients: not false certainty, but clarity.

A plan that makes sense today, can adapt tomorrow, and is built around the people and things that matter most.

I meet and work with plenty of business owners who have done a brilliant job of building a successful company, but have not stopped to look at what would happen if they were no longer able to lead it.

I don’t think that’s careless behaviour I think it’s just what happens when you get busy.

You are focused on the next client, the next hire, the next issue that needs sorting. The bigger “what if” conversations can wait. Until they can’t.

If you own shares in a business, have co-directors or have a family relying on the income it provides, there are some important things to get clear on. Would your family receive fair value for your shares? Would your co-directors have the money to buy them? Would the business have enough breathing space if a key person was absent?

These are not questions with one standard answer. They need to reflect the business, the ownership structure and the people involved. But they are far easier — and far cheaper — to deal with while everyone is well and things are going well.

Investment returns matter. Of course they do.

But the most valuable conversations I have with clients are rarely just about performance.

They are about what is changing in their lives.

It’s different for everyone – kids going to uni, unexpected success in your business, a parent needing care. A house move. A new baby. A conversation about slowing down, selling up or spending more time with family. LIFE happens to us all.

And when life happens that’s where financial planning becomes useful.

It helps turn a good income or a successful business into choices.

It helps give my clients confidence to make decisions without wondering whether they have missed something important. It helps them understand what they can afford to do now, what needs protecting and what their future could look like.

Summer often gives people that bit of breathing space to think about the bigger picture.

So rather than asking, “How are my investments doing?”, it might be worth asking, “Is my money helping me build the life I actually want?”

I have had a few conversations lately that start with, “I think I’ll just wait and see what the government does.”

I understand it.

When there is talk of tax changes, regulation changes and more pressure on business, waiting can feel like the safest option. But I don’t think waiting makes the decision easier.

You absolutely don’t need to predict the next Budget to make good decisions now. You just need a clear understanding of your position, what you are trying to achieve and which parts of the plan need to remain flexible.

For some people, that means making sure investments are structured sensibly.

For others, it is using pensions more effectively, thinking about inheritance planning, or making sure a future business sale is not left until the last minute.

The detail will change from person to person but the principles don’t.

If you work with me to build a plan around what matters to you, review it regularly, and leave enough room to adapt when the rules move, then that feels like much more useful than trying to second-guess Westminster from the sidelines.

A simple question for anyone running a business this summer….

Could you actually switch off for two weeks?

Not just answer emails from the sun lounger. Properly switch off.

Could the team make decisions without you? Would clients be looked after? Would invoices go out? Would the business keep moving if you were unavailable?

A lot of owners tell me they can’t imagine it.

And I get it. If it’s your business, it’s personal. You’ve built the relationships, made the decisions and carried the responsibility for years.

But if the business can’t function without you, that’s not only tiring, it’s a huge risk.

It can affect the value of the business, your ability to step back in the future, and the pressure your family would be under if something unexpected happened.

The answer is not always to work less. It should be to build more resilience around you.

That might mean better processes, stronger people, clearer ownership arrangements or the right protection in place.

A decent holiday is a nice bonus.

A business that is not entirely dependent on you is even better.
