You might think it is an honour to be chosen as the executor for someoneโs will but think again! Being an executor is a job for life and is often a difficult and time-consuming position.
Many people donโt understand the full responsibilities of an executor and can end up being incredibly stressful. It is essential that you carefully consider who to appoint as your executor, as this position carries legal liabilities and can often make the person unpopular with the beneficiaries of your estate.
When choosing your Executors, you can select Individuals, Professionals (e.g. Solicitors or accountants) or a Trust Corporation. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type, which must be considered alongside the circumstances.
It is often wise to appoint more than one executor to help balance the workload - appointing a Professional Executor alongside your relative can guide them through the process and ease their burden. It is also important to have more than one in case one of your choices predeceases you or is unable to perform the role.
We can help you learn more about the role of an Executor and provide advice on who you should choose. Contact us for more information:

Thin and delicate crรชpes are unavoidable throughout Franceโฆ which is a good thing, believe us! Savoury or sweet, they can be topped with just about anything, but popular choices include ham and cheese (obviously โ this is France after all!)

Light, fluffy and smaller in diameter than weโd make back home, pancakes in America are often served as a stack. Sometimes called hotcakes, griddlecakes or flapjacks, theyโre a very popular brunch food. Try with fruit fillings and sweet toppings for dessert, or with crispy bacon and maple syrup for breakfast.
๐น๐ญ ๐ง๐ต๐ฎ๐ถ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ โ ๐ฅ๐ผ๐๐ถ
Everywhere you turn in Thailand, youโll find countless street-food vendors selling all manner of delicious dishes, with roti being the most popular sweet treat. A kind of crispy pancake, itโs cut into small squares, drizzled with condensed milk and sprinkled with sugar. So be prepared for a sugar rush!
๐ฏ๐ต ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ป โ ๐ข๐ธ๐ผ๐ป๐ผ๐บ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐ธ๐ถ
Okonomiyaki loosely translates to โwhat you like, grilledโ and is a Japanese savoury pancake, typically made from a flour base combined with a mixture of shredded potato, cabbage, seafood or pork belly, ginger and soy. The dish originated in Osaka and Hiroshima and you can garnish with toppings of your choice and drizzle over a sweet mirin and honey sauce, or just mayonnaise.

Mental and physical incapacity can happen at any time. You might have thought that a spouse or family member would instantly gain control of your finances and wellbeing, but this isnโt the caseโฆ
Unless you establish a Power of Attorney, the Court of Protection will look to appoint a Deputy for you. This means that the only way your finances or wellbeing can be managed is through an application which can take anywhere in between 12 weeks and 10 months. The judge has the power to decide who to appoint, and this could be someone you wouldnโt have trusted or wanted to manage your affairs.
This is why itโs vital to have a Power of Attorney in place. Doing so means you can appoint the right person to make decisions about your welfare, money or property on your behalf at the right time.

Did you know that 5% of people choose to leave their assets to their pets when they die? In fact, in the North East of England, this figure actually increases to 14%. If this is something youโd like to do, it is vital you have a Will in place to make sure it happens.

Protect your assets!
You might already know what a Trust is, but did you know it is not just wealthy landowners or nobility who can use them? Having a Trust in place that protects you and your loved ones is essential, and there are many benefits to having a Trust when it comes to your potential beneficiaries.
If your assets are distributed directly to the beneficiaries of your Will, they essentially become part of their estate, leaving them open to attack from several issues. These issues can often have a serious impact on young dependants, vulnerable adults or those who arenโt capable of making their own decisions.
The inherited assets are at risk from the following issues:
- Remarriage after first death โ where a new marriage cancels out an existing Will, meaning your children could end up inheriting very little, or worse, nothing at all.
- Divorce / separation of beneficiaries
โ where your childโs spouse is entitled to half of their inheritance after they divorce
- Creditors / bankruptcy claims โ if one of your children starts a business which then runs into financial trouble, they may have to pay off their debts / outstanding loans with the money they have inherited
- Care costs โ where the council take your family home away from your children in order to pay for your care fees
- Taxation โ where your children and grandchildren are slapped with a huge (and ever increasing!) inheritance tax bill after everything is left to them absolutely
Having a Trust in place protects your assets from all of these risks. It protects the family home, investments and any business or agricultural assets, ensuring that you can pass these onto your loved ones after you are gone.
