St Louis Cemetery No 1 hosts burial monuments to notable 18th and 19th century New Orleanians. I visited in New Orleans yesterday. It’s an awe inspiring tribute to the allied response to the Second World War and goes into lots of historical detail on battles and armaments and the machinations of war. But what was more striking were the personal stories that were infused throughout the exhibits as well as the memorial footpath honouring ordinary vets. I was struck by the public funeral notices in Cisternino, Puglia, posted alongside concert posters and adverts for local events. People stopped and read them, sometimes discretely offering the sign of the cross and a quiet prayer.

Though we might look to celebrate a life in our mourning rituals, the circumstances of a death can make the hard to express anything but anger and sorrow. Todays peaceful march to Scotland Yard showed how the grief for Chris Kaba, who was murdered by the police on Monday, was experienced by many with rage at the injustice but also a sense of calm solidarity amongst those that hope the truth will out.
