Most people who move to the UK have no idea this exists.
If you have recently relocated to the UK and you still earn money abroad — from investments, a business, rental income, or savings — HMRC could tax every penny of it.
But there is a legal way to protect it. It is called the Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) Regime, and it came into effect on 6 April 2025.
Here is what it can do for you:
→ Pay 0% UK tax on qualifying foreign income and gains
→ Bring that money into the UK whenever you like — no extra tax
→ Choose whether to claim it year by year, based on what works best for you
The window is just 4 years. Miss it and you cannot go back.
We have written a plain-English guide covering exactly who qualifies, what the trade-offs are, and how to make the claim on your Self Assessment return.
If you or someone you know has recently moved to the UK, this is worth 5 minutes of your time.

Do you live outside the UK but earn UK income?
You might be entitled to the UK personal allowance for non-residents — and missing it could mean overpaying tax.
The personal allowance is £12,570. That's the amount of income you can earn completely tax-free. UK residents get it automatically. Non-residents? You have to know to ask for it.
Here's who typically qualifies:
✅ EEA nationals (even post-Brexit)
✅ Residents of the Isle of Man or Channel Islands
✅ Former or current Crown employees
✅ Non-residents whose country has a double taxation treaty with the UK
And yes — there's a long list of countries covered by UK double taxation treaties that specifically grant personal allowances to their residents.
I've written a full guide covering:
→ Who qualifies under UK domestic law
→ How double taxation treaties affect your entitlement
→ What happened to Commonwealth citizens from April 2010
→ A full territory-by-territory table from HMRC's own DT Digest
If you have UK rental income, a UK pension, or any other UK source income and you live abroad — this is worth reading.

📮 Received a letter from HMRC about MTD for ITSA?
If you're a sole trader or landlord, don't ignore it. This marks the biggest shift in UK tax reporting in decades.
From April 2026, the "once-a-year" tax return is being replaced by digital record-keeping and quarterly updates.
At Ascend Accounts Ltd, we’ve simplified the jargon. I’ve just published a quick guide on: ✅ Who is affected (the £50k & £30k thresholds). ✅ What software you actually need. ✅ How to stay compliant without the stress.

Crypto Investors – Important HMRC Update
If you invest in cryptocurrency, HMRC is paying closer attention than ever before.
From 1 January 2026, crypto exchanges will begin sharing detailed transaction data with HMRC under new reporting rules. This means increased transparency, tighter compliance, and a higher risk of penalties for undeclared gains.
🔍 What this means for you:
✔ Greater visibility of your crypto activity
✔ Capital Gains Tax & Income Tax implications
✔ Stronger record-keeping requirements
✔ Less room for errors or omissions
Whether you trade occasionally or actively invest across multiple platforms, now is the time to understand how these changes affect you.

Most sole traders think MTD for Income Tax is only about profit. That’s a mistake that could be costly by April 2026.
HMRC is changing the rules. If your "qualifying income" (gross turnover, not profit) exceeds £50,000, you are mandated to join Making Tax Digital (MTD) in just over a year.
At Ascend Accounts Ltd, we’re seeing a lot of confusion around:
✅ What counts as "qualifying income"?
✅ How to combine rental and business income.
✅ Which tax year HMRC actually looks at.
I’ve put together a comprehensive guide to help you avoid the "Turnover Trap" and prepare your business early.
