“Do I have to ditch my spreadsheet for MTD?”
No. But a standalone spreadsheet isn’t compliant on its own.
Bridging software connects your existing Excel to HMRC, you keep your workflow, the software handles the compliance.
We’ve explained exactly how it works in our latest blog.

Landlords, MTD applies to property income too.
And if you also have a sole trade, both income streams count toward the £50k threshold.
Our latest guide covers: how qualifying income works for landlords, the 8-filings-per-year trap most people don’t know about, and what records you need to keep digitally.

Making Tax Digital for Landlords: Everything You Need to Know
If you earn over £50k from rental income, MTD applies to you from April 2026. This guide covers qualifying income, quarterly updates, digital records, and how landlords can comply.
27/03/2026
Does Making Tax Digital apply to YOU?
Quick checklist:
✅ You’re a sole trader with gross income over £50,000
✅ You’re a landlord with rental income over £50,000
✅ You’re BOTH and your combined income exceeds £50,000
✅ You filed a 2024/25 Self Assessment showing the above
If you ticked ANY of the above, you’re in Cohort 1. MTD is mandatory for you from April 6.
Important: this is GROSS income (turnover), not profit. You can’t deduct expenses first.
Example: A plumber invoicing £38,000 who also earns £15,000 from a rental property = £53,000 qualifying income. They’re in scope.
NOT currently affected:
❌ Limited companies
❌ Partnerships / LLPs
❌ Income under £50,000 (you’re next in April 2027 if over £30k)
If MTD applies to you, don’t waste time figuring it out alone. Authorise us and we’ll register you for free. The whole thing takes about 2 minutes of your time, we deal with HMRC and the software.

What happens if you ignore Making Tax Digital?
Let’s break it down simply:
🟢 YEAR 1 (2026/27) — SOFT LANDING
→ No penalty points for late QUARTERLY updates
→ You still MUST register and keep digital records
→ Late filing of your year-end return CAN still attract penalties
🟡 YEAR 2 (2027/28) — FULL ENFORCEMENT
→ 1 penalty point for every late quarterly submission
→ 4 points = £200 fine
→ Every subsequent late submission = another £200
→ Points only reset once you’re fully up to date
🔴 ADDITIONAL RISKS
→ Late payment penalties (escalating the longer you wait)
→ Rejected submissions if not filed through recognised software
→ HMRC letters and investigations
The soft landing is NOT a free pass. It’s breathing room to get your setup right. Don’t waste it.
The easiest first step? Authorise us to register you, for free. We handle the HMRC sign-up, the software, everything. Takes about 2 minutes of your time.
