E-commerce bookkeeping looks straightforward until you are selling across four platforms at once.
Shopify, Amazon, eBay, Stripe, PayPal. Each platform has its own payout schedule, fee structure, refund logic and currency handling. When no one has mapped how those flows actually hit the accounts, the bookkeeping quickly becomes unreliable; and so do the VAT figures that follow from it.
The most common problems we see in multi-channel e-commerce bookkeeping:
Platform fees deducted before payout, not mapped correctly in the accounts.
Refunds processed by the platform but not matched against the original sale.
Stripe and PayPal balances not reconciled to the bank.
Currency differences not accounted for where multiple markets are involved.
None of these are difficult to address once the process is set up properly. The difficulty is usually that nobody has designed how the data should flow from each platform into the accounting software in the first place.
If your e-commerce bookkeeping feels harder than it should, we can help.
