If your business is doing real numbers and you’re still searching things like:
→ “Do I still need a tax return if I earn over £150,000?”

31 January Self Assessment: 7 Mistakes That Trigger HMRC Penalties
If you’re a UK small business owner, sole trader or landlord, here are 7 things that can lead to Self Assessment penalties and interest:
1️⃣ Filing your tax return late
2️⃣ Forgetting about payments on account
3️⃣ Missing records or relying on guesswork
4️⃣ Not claiming the right business expenses
5️⃣ Leaving out extra income (like rental or dividends)
6️⃣ Assuming “no tax due” means “no need to file”
7️⃣ Ignoring HMRC letters or emails
HMRC can charge:
• £100 fines for late filing
• Extra penalties if you’re 3, 6 or 12 months late
• Interest on any tax paid after the deadline

Self Assessment: Can You Reduce Your January Tax Payment (Legally)?
If you’re a UK small business owner, sole trader or director, you might be facing:
Your Self Assessment bill, plus
A payment on account for next year, all due by 31 January.
If your income is genuinely lower this year, you may be able to reduce those payments on account and ease the pressure, as long as it’s done properly.
This means:
✅ Checking last year’s bill and this year’s profits
✅ Estimating your new tax bill realistically
✅ Asking HMRC to reduce payments on account if you’ll owe less
⚠️ Understanding that if you reduce too much, HMRC can charge interest on any underpayment later
If you want help making that decision before 31 January:

A proud community moment for us last week. 💬
As part of our local business community with Hammersmith & Fulham Local Businesses and our partnership with Fulham Boys School, one of our student ambassadors, Jimmy, joined us at an evening event at West Digital, the podcast studio where we record.
He spent time speaking with Kate Wilson, Head of Business Development at West Digital, getting a real behind-the-scenes look at how a creative business and studio runs.
No classroom can replace:
• being in the room
• asking real questions
• hearing directly from people doing the work
Huge thanks to Jimmy, Kate and the West Digital team, and Fulham Boys School for trusting us with these opportunities.
This is exactly the kind of local, real-world experience we want to keep creating. 🙌
