Where to Find Us: A Home Built Around Our Clients

For many years, Riverside's home was on Lancaster's quayside. It suited us well, and plenty of our clients will remember climbing the stairs to see us there. As the practice grew, though, we began asking a simple question: is this the easiest place for our clients to come and see us?

The honest answer was that we could do better. So in early 2025, we moved to new premises at Lancaster Business Park on Caton Road.

The move was a deliberate choice, made with our clients in mind. Visiting your accountant shouldn't start with a hunt for a parking space or a worry about access. Our new office offers:

Easy, free parking right outside
A fully accessible building
Large, spacious meeting rooms
Private areas for confidential conversations
Modern technology that makes our work faster and smoother

Many of the conversations we have with clients are personal. They might be about family businesses, succession, or difficult financial decisions, and those deserve a comfortable, private setting. The new office gives us exactly that.

You'll find us at:
Suite 2, 2 Mannin Way, Lancaster Business Park, Caton Road, Lancaster LA1 3SU

We're just a mile off the M6 at Junction 34, so we're easy to reach whether you're coming from across town or further afield.

If you haven't visited us since the move, we'd love to welcome you. The kettle's always on.

A good accountant should do more than look backwards at the figures. They should help your business move forward.

As part of our latest series, we asked our clients:

What makes a good accountant?

This time, we spoke to Tom Pemberton Farm Life and Pemberton's Farm Shop and Dairy .

Based at Birks Farm in the beautiful Fylde coastal town of Lytham, the Pemberton family have decades of hands-on farming experience and have been delivering dairy produce to the local community since the 1950s.

Pembertons Farm Shop opened on 1st July 2017, following a 20-year plan to create a shop filled with quality local produce — grown, reared, freshly picked or made by the family and other excellent Lancashire businesses.

For Tom, a good accountant is someone with knowledge, someone who is accessible and someone who understands how to help a business become more efficient and continue to grow.

It is about being able to pick up the phone, ask a question and know that you will either get the answer straight away or that your accountant will find it quickly.

It is also about having the right advice when the business needs to invest, borrow, repay money or make important financial decisions.

As Tom says:

“A good accountant can save you a lot of money, or cost you a lot of money. Riverside has saved us a lot of money because of their efficiency, the way they handle our business and the way they help push it forward.”

That is exactly the kind of relationship we aim to build with our clients — practical, accessible and focused on helping the business move forward.

Thank you to Tom and the Pemberton family for sharing their thoughts and for trusting Riverside Accountancy to support the business.

As you may have seen earlier, it's Cameron's birthday today, and it's not just any birthday. It's his 21st.

The team got in early this morning to give his desk a proper makeover, with a banner, balloons and rather more confetti than the hoover will thank us for.

And of course, when it came to cakes, there was only ever going to be one choice for a devoted Liverpool FC supporter. A box of red and white cupcakes from Bakes By Amy finished with glittering 21s and a few words every Reds fan will recognise: You'll Never Walk Alone.

It's the small things like this that make Riverside such a good place to be. Happy 21st, Cameron. We hope the rest of the day lives up to the start.

Happy Birthday to Cameron Jack, our AAT Trainee Accountant!
Cameron joined Riverside in September 2024, coming to us straight after his A-Levels, and has been balancing his AAT studies with his day-to-day work ever since.
Back in April he passed his Level 3 exam in Taxation Processes, a great result that reflected the quiet commitment he brings to everything he does.
Outside of work, you'll find him socialising with friends, following the football or settling in with a good film.
Wishing you a brilliant day, Cameron, from all of us at Riverside!

A Little Insight into Riverside

At Riverside, culture isn't something we talk about for the sake of it — it's something we live every day.

It's in the way the team supports each other when things get busy.

It's in the conversations we have with clients — taking the time to listen, not just respond.

And it's in the pride we take in doing things properly, not just quickly.

We genuinely believe that when you have the right people, working in the right environment, with the right values… everything else follows.

Better advice.
Stronger relationships.
And clients who feel looked after — not just managed.

It's a big part of why so many of our clients stay with us long-term… and why our team do too.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

What Should You Look for in an Accountant?

Choosing an accountant is a bit like choosing any trusted adviser. Qualifications matter, but so does the relationship.

Here are a few things worth considering:

Qualifications. Membership of a recognised professional body means your accountant has completed rigorous training and follows a professional code of ethics.
Relevant experience. Someone who understands your sector will ask better questions.
Plain English. You should come away from a conversation understanding more, not less.
Responsiveness. A quick answer to a quick question makes a real difference.
An advisory mindset. The best accountants look ahead as well as back.

At Riverside, our Directors are both ICAEW Chartered Accountants and registered audit Responsible Individuals. We work with sole traders, family firms and multi-million-pound companies in sectors from agriculture to haulage.

What our clients tell us they value most, though, is simpler: being able to pick up the phone and get a clear answer.

If you're weighing up your options, we're always happy to have a chat.

Software and Your Accountant: Better Together

Cloud accounting software has changed how businesses keep their records. Bank feeds, digital invoicing and real-time reports mean far less time spent on data entry.

But software can only record the numbers. It can't tell you what they mean.

That's where your accountant comes in. Software handles the routine admin, and we interpret the figures, spot trends, plan ahead and make sure everything is correct before it reaches HMRC.

This matters more than ever with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Since April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have had to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC. From April 2027, the threshold falls to £30,000. That means many more people will need to get ready over the coming months.

Qualifying income is your total income from self-employment and property before expenses, so it can catch people who don't expect it.

If you're unsure whether the change affects you, or what software would suit you, we'll talk you through it. We'll help you get set up in a way that works for you.

More Than a Once-a-Year Phone Call

Ask most people what an accountant does, and you'll probably hear "tax returns". That's part of it, but it's only the beginning.

Throughout the year, a good accountant can help you with:

planning your tax position well before a deadline arrives
managing cash flow so there's money available when bills and wages are due
budgeting, so you know what the business can reinvest and what you can pay yourself
preparing forecasts and figures when you're applying for funding
working out the full cost of taking on a new employee
identifying where costs have crept up and where you could work more efficiently

Many of our longest-standing client relationships began with a simple set of accounts. Over time, the conversations widened to cover growth, staffing, property and succession planning.

The more we understand your business, the more useful we can be. That's why we value regular contact throughout the year rather than just around deadlines.

Not Sure If You Need to Complete a Self Assessment Tax Return?

It's a question we get asked a lot, and the answer isn't always obvious. You may need to register for Self Assessment if you're newly self-employed, if you rent out a property, or if you trade cryptoassets.

If any of these apply to you for the first time, the deadline to register with HMRC is 5th October — so it's worth checking sooner rather than later. You can use HMRC's tool to check whether you need to submit a return: https://www.gov.uk/check-if-you-need-tax-return

If HMRC has already written to you asking for a return, you'll need to file by the deadline stated in that letter regardless. And if your circumstances have changed and you think you no longer need to file, you can't simply stop — you'll need to contact HMRC directly to explain.

If you're unsure where you stand, or would simply rather have someone talk you through it, get in touch — we're happy to guide you through the process from start to finish.
