Month-end close: Set up October properly

Month-end is where control is won or lost. Before September closes, make sure:
• All invoices are raised and matched to delivery
• Bank is reconciled and debtors are current
• Anything unusual is explained, not parked

Your future self doesn’t need more detail. It needs fewer loose ends.

Client profitability: not all revenue is equal

Two customers can pay the same fee and deliver completely different profit.
Signals a client is costing you more than they’re worth:
• Excess meetings and rework
• High support load
• Slow approvals that stall delivery

If you don’t measure cost-to-serve, you end up rewarding the noisiest work and starving the best work.

Clean desk or messy desk? 🖥️📚☕

Sometimes a tidy desk means everything is under control… and sometimes a messy desk means you’re actually getting things done! 😂

This is my real workspace — paperwork, screens, notes, pens and everything in between. It might not look perfectly organised, but every bit of it represents something I’m working on. Which happens to be never just one thing at once. 🤔😵‍💫😂

So, which are you? 👇
🧼 Clean & organised
📝 Organised chaos
🤯 Complete desk disaster

No judgement — we’ve all been there! 😅

Overheads: stop the quiet creep

Overheads rarely explode. They creep.
A simple monthly control: review your top 10 overhead lines and ask:
• Do we still need it?
• Is it used properly?
• Who owns it?

This isn’t about cutting for sport. It’s about protecting margin as the business grows. If you want an overhead review that shows what I’d challenge first get in contact.

Debtors: protect cash without being aggressive

“We’re busy” is not a collections strategy.
A debtor rhythm that stays professional:
• Invoice the same day delivery is complete
• Confirm the payment date in writing
• Weekly chase slot (same day/time, owned by one person)

Consistency beats intensity. Slow payers rely on the absence of process.

How much is your debtors? Do you chase regularly for your late payer? or do you let it slide until you need the money?

For the new followers
This is me - the face behind the work place name.
Abbie , and here is something new for me ..

Today I stepped outside of my comfort zone and attended my first all-female networking meeting. 💕

I’ll be honest… I felt quite anxious beforehand. Walking into a room full of people I didn’t know definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone!

But I needn’t have worried. Everyone was so welcoming, friendly and encouraging, which made it much easier to relax and be myself.

We each had the opportunity to share our “why” — why we started our businesses, what motivates us and a little bit about our background. It was so lovely hearing everyone’s different stories and learning more about the women behind the businesses.

As someone working in accountancy and bookkeeping, I’m used to focusing on the numbers, but today was a great reminder that behind every business are real people, personal journeys and reasons for doing what we do. 📊✨

I’m really glad I pushed myself to go. Sometimes the hardest part is simply walking through the door — and you never know what connections, conversations and opportunities might come from it.

Here’s to getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and continuing to put myself out there! 🌸

Bank holiday or not, September will arrive with bills, payroll, and targets.

A strong month starts with a clean base:
• Bank reconciled
• Debtors list current with next actions
• Any unusual spend explained (not parked)

Control is built in these small habits.

If you want me to tighten your month-end process so you start each month on the front foot, book a free call, the link is in my bio.

Long weekends have a habit of creating cash surprises.

Before you switch off, check:
• Invoices sent (nothing sat in drafts)
• Debtors chased (especially anything already overdue)
• Next week’s outgoings (payroll, suppliers, tax/VAT)

20 minutes now beats a rough Tuesday.

If you want a cash routine your team can run without you chasing, book a free call, the link is in my bio.

If you only ask one question each month, make it this:
“What changed, and why?”

Apply it to three lines:
• Gross margin
• Payroll
• Overheads

Most problems show up as movement before they show up as panic.

If you want a monthly pack that highlights what changed (in plain English), book a free call, the link is in my bio.

A useful budget is not a perfect budget. It’s a decision tool.

Keep it simple:
• Lock your fixed costs
• Forecast payroll with known hires/leavers
• Set one sales and margin assumption you can defend

Then review variance monthly and act. That’s the whole point.
