HMRC updated its guidance on how they send text messages to taxpayers. 📱👇
If you're running a business or filing Self-Assessment, you might occasionally receive a text from HMRC about overdue tax payments, debt reminders, or progress on your VAT registration application.
While these texts are genuine reminders, fraudsters frequently copy HMRC branding to trick business owners. Here is a simple checklist to keep your details safe:
✅ Real HMRC texts will:
• Come from "HM Revenue and Customs".
• Tell you to log into your account via official GOV.UK channels.
❌ Real HMRC texts will NEVER:
• Send you a direct link asking for payment or banking details.
• Offer an instant "tax rebate" or "refund" if you click a link.
• Threaten immediate police action or legal arrest.
What to do if you get a suspicious text:
Don't click any links! Forward the message to 60599 or email [email protected], then delete it.
