When someone asks me whether they have enough to retire, my first thought isn't:

“How big is your pension?”

It’s:

“What do you want your retirement to look like?”

Because £1 million means very different things to different people.

Where you live.

Whether you have a mortgage.

Your spending.

Your travel plans.

Whether you want to help your children.

Other income.

Your State Pension.

Your investments.

And, importantly, how long the money may need to last.

Retirement planning isn't about finding one magic number.

It’s about understanding what your money needs to do — and testing whether your plan can support the life you actually want.

This is general information and not personal financial advice. Investment values can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invest.

This is one of the questions I expect to hear much more about over the next year.

From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be brought within the value of a person's estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

If you have a significant pension, you may therefore be wondering:

“Should I be doing something differently?”

The answer isn't automatically yes.

There is no one-size-fits-all response to the changes.

For some people, their pension will continue to be an important part of their retirement planning.

For others, the change may mean their pension needs to be considered differently alongside their other assets and estate planning.

The important thing is not to react to a headline.

It’s to understand how the rules interact with your own circumstances and your wider financial plan.

Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and tax rules can change. This post is for general information only and does not constitute personal financial advice.

I’m not asking how many statements arrive through your letterbox.

I mean:

Do you know what each pension is invested in?

Do you know what you’re paying?

Do you know whether any of them have valuable older benefits?

Do you know what they’re worth?

And do you know how they fit together?

Having several pensions isn't automatically a problem.

And consolidating them isn't automatically the answer either.

Some older pensions can have benefits or guarantees that need careful consideration before anything is moved.

The important thing is understanding what you already have before deciding what, if anything, should change.

That’s particularly important if you’ve built up significant pension savings over a number of years.

Pensions are investments. Their value can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invest. Pension and tax rules can change and depend on individual circumstances. This is general information and not personal financial advice.

I think this is one of the reasons people put off financial planning.

Not because they don’t care about their finances.

Quite the opposite.

They care so much that they don’t know which bit to tackle first.

The pension.

The investments.

The business.

The tax.

The cash sitting in the bank.

The question of when they could actually retire.

The question of what happens to everything if they die.

So they leave it for another year.

And another.

Until one day they realise they’ve accumulated quite a lot of wealth, but don’t necessarily have a clear picture of how it all fits together.

You don’t have to have all the answers before you start.

Sometimes the first step is simply putting everything on the table and understanding what you actually have.

It’s a question I hear in different ways.

“I already have an investment portfolio.”

“I’ve got a pension adviser.”

“My accountant deals with all of that.”

“I’m pretty good with money.”

And you may be.

Having investments doesn't automatically mean you need financial advice.

But as your finances become more complicated, there can be value in stepping back and looking at everything together.

For example:

Are your pensions working towards the same retirement goals?
Do you understand the different charges and benefits?
How much of your wealth is in cash?
What role does your business play in your overall financial position?
Are your investments appropriate for the timeframe you have?
Have you thought about how your plans fit with your wider estate?

None of those questions necessarily means something needs changing.

Sometimes the value is simply in understanding where you are and why you’re doing what you’re doing.

That’s financial planning.

Not just managing money.

Looking at the whole picture.

Investments can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invest. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and tax rules can change. This is general information and not personal financial advice.

There’s a point where your financial life can become more complicated without you really noticing.

One pension becomes three.

Savings turn into investments.

Your business starts holding significant cash.

You’ve built up wealth, but you’re still managing each part separately.

And because nothing is necessarily wrong, it’s easy to carry on as you are.

But at some point, you might start asking:

“How does all of this actually fit together?”

That’s a very different question from:

“Where should I invest my money?”

Financial planning is about looking at the bigger picture.

Your pensions.
Your investments.
Your cash.
Your business.
Your future plans.

And understanding how they all work together.

Because building wealth is one thing.

Knowing what you want it to do for you is another.

If you've spent years building your financial position, you probably don't need more noise.

You need clarity.

You may have:

Several pension pots
Investments
ISAs
Significant cash
A successful business
A high income
Or a growing concern about Inheritance Tax

And individually, each part may make perfect sense.

But the real question is:

Does it all work together?

That's the bit that can become difficult to see when you've built your wealth gradually over many years.

Financial planning isn't about predicting the future.

It's about understanding where you are, deciding where you want to go, and making informed decisions about the journey between the two.

That's the work I do.

And if your finances have become more complicated as you've become more successful, that's often when a proper financial plan becomes most useful.

If you're wondering whether everything is joined up as well as it could be, that's a conversation I'm always happy to have.

This post is for general information and does not constitute personal financial advice.

This is something I see business owners wrestle with.

The business is doing well.

Cash has accumulated.

And it feels reassuring to see the balance sitting there.

But eventually the question becomes:

“What is all this cash actually for?”

Some of it might be needed for working capital.

Some might be needed for tax.

Some might be retained for future investment in the business.

But sometimes a significant amount has simply accumulated because nobody has stopped to decide what its purpose is.

And that's where the conversation becomes interesting.

Because the answer isn't automatically:

“Take it out.”

It isn't automatically:

“Invest it.”

And it certainly isn't:

“Put it into a pension.”

The right question is:

“What job does this money need to do?”

That's a much better starting point.

This is one of my favourite financial planning questions. Not:“What should I invest in?”Not:“What's the best pension?”Not...

This is one of my favourite financial planning questions.

Not:

“What should I invest in?”

Not:

“What's the best pension?”

Not even:

“How much should I save?”

But:

“If I carry on exactly as I am, where will I end up?”

Because that's what financial planning is really about.

You take today's position.

You make some reasonable assumptions.

And you look at where that could take you.

Then you can ask:

Is that where I actually want to be?

If yes, brilliant.

If not, you have something much more useful than a product recommendation.

You have a starting point for a proper conversation about what needs to change.
