🇨🇦 NOW A TOP DESTINATION FOR STUDY-TO-IMMIGRATE – BEATS THE ! 🇨🇦
(Important update for Sri Lankans considering overseas study & immigration!)
Despite recent global immigration cuts, Canada has become a more attractive study-to-immigrate destination than the United Kingdom — especially if your goal is permanent residency (PR) after graduation.
Here’s why many international students — including Sri Lankans — are now looking at Canada: 👇
📌 Faster Path to Permanent Residency
✔ In Canada, international graduates can become eligible for permanent residency as soon as about 1 year after graduation through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program.
✔ In the UK, international students usually have to wait at least 5 years after graduating before qualifying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — and this could increase to 10 years under proposed policy changes.
📌 Better Work Rights After Graduation
🎓 In Canada, your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) can be valid for up to 3 years (depending on your program length).
🎓 In the UK, bachelor’s or master’s grads applying in 2026 can get only 2 years, and those applying from 2027 will get a maximum of 18 months to work after graduating.
📌 Work Experience Counts Toward PR
💼 In Canada, the time you spend working counts directly towards eligibility for permanent residency — even while on your PGWP.
💼 In the UK, work you do on your post-study visa does not count toward the time needed for ILR. Graduates must switch to another work visa first (like a skilled worker visa) before that time starts counting.
✨ Example in Practice:
A graduate in Canada could receive permanent residency by around age 25, while in the UK the same route might take 7+ years or even up to 12+ years if new rules come into effect.
🎯 Bottom Line:
If your priority is a quicker and more direct route from studying abroad to permanent settlement, Canada currently offers a smoother and faster pathway than the UK.
