Police say Malandrino maintained multiple romantic relationships at the same time. In some instances, investigators allege money obtained from one victim was used to make payments to another, helping prolong the alleged deception.

🚨A 41-year-old Ontario man has been arrested after Durham Regional Police say five women were allegedly defrauded of more than $1 million through a sophisticated romance-fraud scheme that investigators say unfolded over several years.

Police launched Project Maroon after receiving a report in November 2025. Investigators allege the scheme dates back to 2020 and continued through 2025.

The accused, Salvatore Malandrino, 41, of Marmora, Ontario, allegedly did not rely on dating apps or online relationships to find his victims.

Instead, police say he met women through everyday social and professional interactions, including his dog-training business, Friendly K9, and local fitness facilities.

The investigation involved an extensive review of thousands of banking and financial records, revealing what police described as a complex pattern of transfers, cash withdrawals and spending that investigators say did not match the purposes for which the money was originally provided.

Malandrino was arrested in Ajax on August 31, 2026, without incident. Police say he was allegedly violating two court-imposed release orders at the time of his arrest.

He is facing:

• 5 counts of fraud over $5,000
• Laundering proceeds of crime
• Possession of proceeds obtained by crime
• 2 counts of failing to comply with a release order
• Uttering a forged document

He was held for a bail hearing.

Durham police say they are concerned that additional victims may exist and are urging anyone who believes they may have been financially deceived in a romantic relationship with the accused to come forward.

Police also emphasized that victims of romance fraud often experience shame, embarrassment and self-blame — but the responsibility belongs to the person who carried out the alleged deception, not the victim.

🚨 Toronto’s fire chief is warning that lithium-ion battery fires have become one of the most serious fire-safety threats facing the city, with incidents involving these batteries rising by more than 200% since 2022.

Fire Chief Jim Jessop says the biggest concern is not electric vehicles or phones, but batteries used in e-bikes and e-scooters — particularly batteries that are imported without meeting recognized safety standards.

According to Jessop, some of these batteries can be purchased online and brought into Canada without adequate regulation or certification. In some cases, batteries are also used with devices they were never designed for.

THE DANGER DOESN’T END WHEN THE FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED

Lithium-ion batteries can enter a process known as “thermal runaway,” creating extremely intense and unpredictable fires. Toronto firefighters have encountered batteries that appeared to be extinguished, only to reignite 24 or even 36 hours later.

Because of the risks, Toronto Fire Services has changed how it responds to these incidents. Hazardous-materials teams and specialized hazmat technicians now attend every lithium-ion battery fire.

Firefighters also face additional exposure risks. Protective equipment contaminated by smoke from these fires requires deeper specialized cleaning — something Toronto Fire Services says was not normally necessary after a conventional room-and-contents fire.

⚠️ DAMAGED BATTERIES CAN BE A TICKING TIME BOMB

Experts are also warning consumers not to ignore physical damage.

Randy Narine, president of Clean Core Research, says even a slightly swollen lithium-ion battery should be considered unsafe. A battery may continue working after being damaged, but that does not mean it is safe.

Damage can increase the possibility of thermal runaway, and there is no reliable way to predict exactly when a compromised battery will fail.

CONCERNS FOR APARTMENT BUILDINGS

Toronto Fire Services is asking governments to strengthen regulations.

The fire chief says the federal government should consider mandatory safety standards for batteries entering Canada, while Ontario is examining possible changes to the Ontario Fire Code.

One proposal being considered is whether apartment buildings should have limits on the number of e-bikes and other micromobility devices stored in a single building.

Health Canada says it is examining possible regulatory measures, while the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal says potential amendments to the Ontario Fire Code are being explored as part of broader efforts to improve fire safety.

THE TIME TO ESCAPE MAY BE SHRINKING

Jessop says the danger inside modern homes has already changed dramatically.

About 50 years ago, firefighters estimated that a room could take roughly 20–25 minutes to become fully engulfed in flames. With modern furniture and materials, that window can now be closer to five minutes.

When a lithium-ion battery becomes involved, the situation can become even more extreme — with experts warning that occupants may have only around 90 seconds to reach safety.

Narine describes a battery failure as capable of producing a powerful jet of flame reaching temperatures of roughly 500°C, potentially igniting nearby materials almost immediately.

Toronto’s fire chief says firefighters are now entering buildings where fires can be more intense, more unpredictable and more toxic than in the past.

The message from fire officials is clear: lithium-ion batteries are increasingly becoming a serious public-safety issue, and governments are under growing pressure to tighten safety standards before more lives and homes are put at risk.

🚨 MAJOR EI RULING COULD AFFECT WOMEN LAID OFF AROUND MATERNITY LEAVE

The Federal Court of Appeal has ruled that parts of Canada’s Employment Insurance system are unconstitutional because they can discriminate against women who lose their jobs around the time they take maternity or parental leave.

The case involved six women in Quebec who were denied some or all regular EI benefits after being laid off shortly before, during or after maternity leave.

The court found that the rules disproportionately affect women and violate equality rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Important: EI rules have NOT changed yet.

The court suspended its decision for one year to give Parliament time to respond, and the federal government says it is reviewing the ruling and considering its next steps.
