Bank reconciliation is the process of comparing the balance shown in a company’s cash book with the balance in its bank statement. It is an important accounting activity, and here’s why it matters:
1. Ensures Accuracy of Records
Bank reconciliation helps detect differences between the company’s records and the bank’s records, ensuring both are accurate and up to date.
2. Detects Errors
Mistakes such as incorrect entries, double postings, or missed transactions can be identified and corrected through reconciliation.
3. Prevents Fraud
Regular reconciliation can reveal unauthorized transactions, theft, or fraud early, helping to protect business funds.
4. Identifies Timing Differences
Some transactions (like cheques issued but not yet cleared or deposits in transit) may cause temporary differences. Reconciliation explains these timing gaps.
5. Improves Cash Management
It gives a clear picture of actual available cash, helping businesses manage their cash flow more effectively.
6. Facilitates Financial Reporting
Accurate bank balances are essential for preparing reliable financial statements.
7. Builds Trust and Accountability
Regular reconciliation ensures transparency and builds confidence among stakeholders, auditors, and management.
8. Helps in Budgeting and Planning
Knowing the true financial position helps businesses make better financial decisions and plans.
In short, bank reconciliation is essential for accuracy, control, and financial reliability in any organization.

If you’re looking for a bookkeeper for your business, here’s the quickest way to get clear on what you need and how to find the right person.
What kind of bookkeeping help do you need?
Most businesses fall into one of these categories:
- Basic bookkeeping — tracking income/expenses, reconciling accounts, categorizing transactions
- Full‑cycle bookkeeping — invoicing, bill payments, payroll coordination, monthly reporting
- Controller‑level support — budgeting, cash‑flow forecasting, financial analysis
- Cleanup/catch‑up work — fixing past books, preparing for taxes, organizing messy records
If you tell me which one fits your situation, I can narrow the options. Call Rachel @ 506-227-7044

HST you collect does not belong to you. It belongs to CRA. If it is sitting in your general account alongside your revenue, it is easy to spend without meaning to. Then remittance comes due and the money is not there. The fix is a separate holding account for HST. Move the amount every time it comes in. When remittance is due, the money is already set aside. This is one of the first things I put in place when I take on a new client.

Your bank balance is not your business position. A lot of business owners check their account, see a number they feel okay about, and assume they are fine. But if HST you owe is sitting in that account, or invoices you sent have not come in yet, that number is not the real picture. Knowing what you actually have versus what you are holding for CRA is one of the first things that gets clear when your books are current. If you are not sure what your real position is right now, that is a good reason to find out.

Tax season is here, and QuickBooks can make things a lot easier when it is set up and used properly.
The hard part is knowing if everything is recorded right. Expenses end up in the wrong category. Transfers get messy. You are not always sure if something has been entered twice or missed completely. You do your best, but there is still that little voice asking if it is actually right.
I offer QuickBooks cleanups to keep your books accurate, organized, and ready to go. You can hand everything off with confidence, or I can handle your income tax filing too.
If you want a second set of eyes before you send everything in, give me a call or message me at 506-227-7044. I'm happy to help.
