I Thought I Was Alone Until He Spoke 09/09/2026

“I thought I was alone… until He spoke.”

Another podcast interview sharing my story has just gone live on YouTube.

It still amazes me that something that happened so many years ago, during one of the most frightening moments of my life, has now become something I am being invited to talk about with people around the world.

My near-death experience changed the way I understand God, love, life and even death itself. And perhaps most importantly, it taught me that some of the most broken places in our lives can eventually become places of incredible meaning.

That journey became my book, A Gift in the Wreckage: Discovering God’s Grace in Life’s Broken Places.

If you’ve ever wondered what might happen when we die, how we find meaning in the things that break us, or whether we are ever truly alone, I hope you’ll listen to this conversation.

And if my story resonates with you, A Gift in the Wreckage is available on Amazon. If you are a Kindle subscriber, it is a free read.

One of the services I find most meaningful to offer at Riverview Wellness is Reiki, and yet it is also one that many people seem hesitant to try.

I've been thinking about why.

Maybe it's because Reiki is difficult to understand until you've experienced it. Maybe you've heard the word but don't really know what happens during a session. Or perhaps it simply feels a little outside of what you're accustomed to.

I understand that.

But I also understand what it is like to hurt.

After my own accident, I learned what it is like to live with injuries and to search for relief. When something continues to hurt, you become much more open to asking:

What else could I try?

That journey is part of what led me to explore different approaches to wellness and healing, and eventually to become a Reiki Master myself.

Reiki has a fascinating history.

It originated in Japan in the early 1920s with Mikao Usui. According to Reiki tradition, Usui spent 21 days fasting, meditating and engaging in spiritual practice on Mount Kurama.

During that time, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening.

Reiki tradition also tells the story that, while descending the mountain afterward, Usui injured his toe. He instinctively placed his hands around it and experienced an unexpected easing of the pain and healing. This became part of the traditional story surrounding the beginnings of Reiki.

Today, more than 100 years later, Reiki is practised around the world and is also offered as a complementary wellness practice in some hospitals, cancer centres, hospices and palliative-care settings.

But what does Reiki actually feel like?

That's the part I wish more people understood.

Different Reiki Masters practise in slightly different ways. I am an Intuitive Reiki Master, and over the years my Reiki sessions have evolved into an experience that intentionally engages your senses.

You lie comfortably on my table, fully clothed, beneath a warm blanket.

The lighting is soft.

Beautiful, calming sounds surround you.

Essential oils provide a gentle aroma.

My hands move quietly to different areas of your body as I practise Reiki.

There is warmth. Stillness. Sound. Scent. Touch.

Your senses, which spend so much of the day being bombarded with information, are suddenly being invited to experience something completely different.

Peace.

And perhaps that is why I find Reiki so beautiful.

Whether you are carrying physical discomfort, recovering from an injury, moving through something emotionally difficult, feeling exhausted or simply realizing that you haven't truly stopped in a very long time, Reiki gives you a space where nothing is required of you.

You don't have to talk.

You don't have to perform.

You don't have to take care of anyone.

You simply lie there and receive.

Reiki is not a religion. My own Reiki practice is deeply connected to my spirituality and my belief in God, but you don't need to share my beliefs to experience a session.

And you don't have to be convinced about Reiki.

Perhaps you've tried many different things looking for relief.

Perhaps you've wondered about Reiki but thought, I don't know if that's for me.

Maybe the question isn't whether you completely understand it.

Maybe the question is simply:

Could this be something I haven't tried yet?

And because I would love to give more people the opportunity to experience Reiki for themselves, throughout September I am offering a first Reiki session for $50, regularly $60.

No pressure to believe.

Just an invitation to experience it and decide for yourself.

I had one of those little moments today that reminded me how fortunate we are to live in such a wonderful community.

A client came in on this wet, rainy afternoon for our Welcome to September Special.

As I gave her a head massage and lymphatic facial drainage treatment, I found myself smiling. Outside it was grey and rainy, and there she was, warm and cozy, taking some time out of her day to be pampered and care for her own wellbeing.

After her treatment, she asked me if I would like some fresh eggs she had out in her car.

Would I ever! 🥚

She came back in with a whole flat of beautiful fresh eggs for me, and it was just one of those simple moments that makes you appreciate where you live.

I love being part of a community where people support one another, share what they have, stop for a chat and offer a little kindness just because they can.

Today was a lovely reminder that Riverview is about more than the services I offer. It's also about the people who come through my door and the community we're all part of.

A rainy afternoon, a relaxing treatment, a flat of fresh eggs and a reminder of just how lucky we are to call this community home.
