💼 GST/HST for Businesses: Do You Need to Register?

One of the most common misconceptions among business owners is that GST/HST registration is based on a calendar year. In reality, the CRA looks at your revenue using a rolling 4 consecutive quarter test.

Once your business exceeds $30,000 in taxable revenue, GST/HST registration may be required.

However, not every business follows the same rules.

Some businesses and service providers, such as certain rideshare drivers, commercial real estate operators, landlords, and non-resident digital businesses, may have different registration requirements.

On the other hand, certain services may be exempt from charging GST/HST, including some financial, insurance, healthcare, educational, and transportation services.

The challenge? Most business owners don’t have the time to constantly monitor thresholds, registration requirements, and changing obligations.

That’s where we come in. At T.U.A, we help our clients:
✔️ Keep records organized
✔️ Track rolling revenue thresholds
✔️ Monitor GST/HST obligations
✔️ Determine when registration may be required
✔️ Develop proactive tax strategies

Every business is different, and the right approach depends on your unique situation.

Here’s where the Disability Tax Credit can become even more impactful….

One of the key features of the DTC is transferability. If a person with a disability is not able to fully use the credit themselves, it may be transferred to a supporting family member or caregiver in certain situations.

Over time, this can lead to significant tax savings, often totaling thousands of dollars depending on eligibility and circumstances.

Another important point many people don’t realize is that the DTC can sometimes be applied retroactively. If you qualified in previous years but didn’t claim it, you may be able to go back and adjust prior tax returns.

This is done through a T1 adjustment, which can help recover tax refunds that were previously missed.

Because every situation is different, getting it right matters… from eligibility to retroactive claims and everything in between.

T.U.A can assist with understanding eligibility, completing the required forms, and ensuring you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to.

If you think you may qualify for the Disability Tax Credit, here’s what the application process actually looks like.

Step 1: Obtain the form
You’ll need Form T2201 — the official Disability Tax Credit Certificate from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Step 2: Complete your section
The applicant fills out their portion of the form with basic personal information.

Step 3: Medical certification
A qualified medical practitioner (such as a doctor or specialist) must complete and sign the medical portion, confirming how the condition impacts daily living.

Step 4: Submission
Once completed, the form is submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for review and approval of eligibility.

If this feels overwhelming or you’re unsure where to start, professional support is available, including a free consultation call to walk you through the process step by step (link in bio).

👉 In Part 3, we’ll cover additional benefits you may be eligible for… including credits and adjustments many people miss entirely.

The Disability Tax Credit is something many Canadians have heard of, but far fewer actually understand and even fewer are claiming it.

The potential benefit? It can translate into thousands of dollars in tax savings or a larger tax refund for eligible individuals or their supporting family members.

So who may qualify?

The credit may apply when a physical or mental condition significantly impacts daily living. This can include difficulties with things like hearing, walking, completing everyday tasks, or managing mental health. In many cases, these challenges can also affect a person’s ability to work.

The important thing to know is that eligibility isn’t always obvious and many people who qualify don’t even realize it.

If you’re unsure whether you or a loved one may be eligible, there are professionals who can help break it down clearly.

👉 In Part 2, we’ll walk through how the application process works and what you need to get started.

Follow along so you don’t miss out and so you stay up to date on ways to file smarter and maximize your tax benefits.
