There are two key numbers you need to understand:
1️⃣ GST/HST collected from customers: this is the tax you’ve charged on your sales and collected on behalf of the CRA.
2️⃣ Input Tax Credits (ITCs): this is the GST/HST you’ve paid on eligible business expenses that you may be able to claim back.
💡 The basic formula:
GST/HST Collected - GST/HST Paid on Eligible Expenses (ITCs) = Amount Owing (or Refund)

Your income tax is generally based on the profit your business earns.
Your GST/HST obligation is based on the tax you collect from your customers.
That GST/HST isn’t your money to keep… you’re collecting it on behalf of the CRA and are responsible for remitting it when it’s due.
