Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action 92 urges Canada’s corporate sector to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a reconciliation framework.
This includes:
• meaningful consultation and consent for development
• employment opportunities and long-term benefits for Indigenous people
• training for management and staff on the history of Indigenous people in Canada

To apply CTA 92 in my business, I use funds with responsible investing mandates when possible.

I review commentary from fund managers about how UNDRIP (UN Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples) principles have been applied to their portfolios.

If I see negative news articles about companies included in a fund, I ask the management team to justify their inclusion.

There are several approaches to responsible investing strategy, and they all have a place. For example:
• Investing in specific businesses and projects mandated to make an impact
• Only investing in companies that demonstrate commitment to responsibility
• As a significant shareholder, ask management to make meaningful improvements
• Invest in the “best in class” to gently encourage changes in policy across all companies in an industry

Financial tip of the day: Be aware of your cash flow

Knowing exactly how much money you have coming in and going out each month can help you make better financial decisions and avoid overspending.

Did you know? Common-law relationships are NOT recognized by estate law in Ontario. (Neither are polycules!)

Q***r folks are disproportionately affected by estate law:
50% of q***r spouses live in a common-law relationship vs 30% of straight spouses.

Contrary to what many think, in the absence of a will a common-law spouse does NOT automatically inherit their spouse’s estate like a married spouse does.

In the absence of a will, the executor, heirs and guardians for dependents are determined by the courts. And that may not be who you want.

This means that if one of you dies, the other could be left without financial protection, unless you have provided for this possibility.

Make a will.
Keep it up-to-date.

Common-law partners should have legal wills that list how they want their estate handled if they die prematurely and who they want to be responsible for raising any minor children and other dependents they have.

Financial tip of the day

Buy life and health insurance

When facing illness, disability or premature death, insurance is the best tool for keeping your retirement and other savings goals on track. Savings can be drained faster than it took to build them, leaving you – or loved ones – without enough to maintain your lifestyle.
