Great news for freelancers, businesses, and travelers! Bangladesh Bank has officially stepped up efforts to bring international digital payment platforms to the country by introducing a new "Digital Value Accounts" (DVA) framework.

This game-changing move allows local banks to partner with global payment giants like PayPal, Google Wallet, and Payoneer. It will simplify cross-border earnings for freelancers and expand transaction limits for overseas medical and travel expenses. While PayPal is currently reviewing its internal policies for market entry, industry experts confirm that the major legal barriers have already been cleared, and local commercial banks are actively exploring these exciting new partnerships.

Recent Eurostat data reveals that Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) exports to the European Union dropped by 16.43% year-on-year, totaling €8.64 billion during the January-June period of 2026. This decline was driven by a dual challenge: an 8.22% drop in export volume and an 8.94% decrease in average unit prices.

This trend reflects a broader global slowdown, as overall EU apparel imports from global suppliers fell by 9.7% amid ongoing inflationary pressures and reduced consumer spending. While major regional competitors like China, India, and Turkey also faced export declines, there is a positive takeaway for Bangladesh—June saw a 6.53% increase in shipment volumes compared to the previous year, hinting at a potential, gradual market recovery. Adapting to these shifting global demands will remain key for the sector moving forward.

10/08/2026

In a sign of ongoing economic caution, private sector credit growth in Bangladesh has dropped to a record low of 4.47%. According to financial data, this deceleration reflects a notable slowdown in business borrowing, driven primarily by sluggish consumer demand, high interest rates under tight monetary policies, and persistent energy supply constraints.

With enterprise expansion and new investments temporarily taking a backseat, industry experts highlight that ensuring energy security, stabilizing inflation, and boosting investor confidence will be crucial to re-energizing the private sector and accelerating economic growth.

Some positive news for the economy! According to a recent Bangladesh Bank quarterly report, the Bangladeshi Taka has emerged as one of the most stable currencies in South Asia. Over the past year, it depreciated by just 0.59% against the US dollar—a highly resilient performance compared to many neighboring economies.

This stability is largely driven by the central bank's successful shift to a market-based exchange rate regime, alongside a strong boost in remittance inflows and export earnings. With foreign exchange reserves climbing to $31.60 billion by late July, keeping the Taka stable is playing a critical role in easing the cost of imported essentials like fuel and food, helping to protect consumers from imported inflation.
