Debt does not define you. Avoiding the number can make it feel heavier. Looking gives you options.

Save this for the day you are ready to look at the numbers without judging yourself.

Over the past 6 weeks, Josie has explored the support available to veteran families through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).

We’ve covered:
• The Partner Service Pension
• The War Widow(er) Pension
• The Orphan’s Pension
• Bereavement Payments
• Family & Domestic Support

These benefits and services can provide important financial and practical support to eligible veterans and their families, particularly during times of change, loss or transition.

Understanding what you may be entitled to is an important part of making sure your family receives the support available to you.

If you’ve missed any of the series, head back through our recent posts to catch up. And remember, DVA entitlements can be complex, so getting the right advice can help you understand how the rules apply to your individual circumstances.

You don’t have to face family or domestic violence alone.

If you’re a veteran, ADF member or part of a Defence family, DVA and other specialist services can provide support when you need it most.

If you are someone you know is in need of a helping hand, here are a few organisations you can reachout to:
- Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling
- Safe Zone Support
- DVA Crisis Payments
- The Acute Support Package
- 1800RESPECT and MensLine Australia
- SeMPRO support for sexual misconduct connected to military service

Support is available for emotional, practical and financial needs, and you don’t have to wait until things reach a crisis point to ask for help.

If you or someone you know is experiencing family or domestic violence, reaching out is an important first step.

Legacy Badge Day

Yesterday, Hannah and Kaitlyn spent the morning around ANZAC Square showing their support for Legacy Australia Badge Day.

It was a great opportunity to get out into the community, wear our badges with pride and support the incredible work Legacy does for the families of veterans.

Loyalty can be a wonderful quality, but it should not stop you reviewing the price and value of the services you use.

A renewal notice is a prompt to compare, not proof that you are receiving the best available deal.

Check the price, cover, features, fees, excesses and switching costs before deciding whether to stay or move.

Which household bill have you held the longest: insurance, mortgage, phone or energy?

Use the answer as your first loyalty check.

What happens to your DVA payments when a veteran passes away?

Losing a loved one is difficult enough without having to navigate complicated financial matters.

DVA may provide bereavement payments and funeral assistance to eligible veterans and their families, including:

- Bereavement payments for a surviving partner or, in some circumstances, the veteran’s estate
- Up to 98 days of pension payments in certain circumstances
- Funeral assistance where eligibility requirements are met
- Contributions towards funeral, burial or cremation expenses
- Assistance for certain eligible veterans even where the death was not service-related

Some payments may happen automatically, while others require an application, so it’s important to notify DVA as soon as possible following a veteran’s passing.

Understanding what you're entitled to can help ease some of the financial pressure during an incredibly difficult time.

Shout out to Lloyd and the Legacy Brisbane team for dropping this to us!

Keep an eye out for a familiar sight in Brisbane City next Thursday! 💙

Soldiers and Officers from the Australian Army’s 1st Signal Regiment will once again take to the streets for our annual Legacy Week Street Collection, raising vital funds to support veterans’ families.

This year marks an incredible 27 consecutive years of 1st Signal Regiment supporting Legacy Brisbane during Legacy Week.

For the Regiment, that commitment carries particular meaning. After experiencing the sudden loss of one of their own in 2025, they saw first-hand how quickly Legacy steps in to support the families left behind.

So, if you’re in Brisbane City next Thursday, 3rd September, keep an eye out for the 1st Signal Regiment and our iconic Legacy bears and badges. 🧸💙

Say hello, make a donation and help us continue our promise to veterans’ families.
