Buying a property? The most expensive mistake happens before you've even called the bank ๐Ÿ‘€

This year, a lot of lenders have tightened up on trust and company loans. Which means the structure you choose now can shape who'll even lend to you, not just what you claim later.

Structure, tax, deposit strategy. Worth sorting before you fall in love with the place, not after.

Watch this before you start house hunting ๐Ÿ

Blink and it's BAS time again ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Q1 has already wrapped up, which means your first BAS of the financial year is due 28 October.

Here's the thing though, a BAS deadline is only stressful when it sneaks up on you. Leave it to the last week and it's a scramble to find receipts, chase figures and hope the numbers add up. Get across it early and it's just... a Tuesday.

If your bookkeeping's been sitting in the "I'll sort it later" pile, later is now. And if that pile has quietly become a mountain, that's exactly what we're here for. We'll get it lodged properly and on time, no panic required.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Q1 BAS due 28 October. Need a hand getting it sorted?

Everyone assumes you need a finance degree to get your foot in the door here. You don't ๐Ÿ‘€

Some of the best careers at AKW start on the admin team, and it's a brilliant place to land whether you're fresh out of school or looking to make a change and try something new. You're right in the middle of it from day one, learning how a nearly 100-year-old firm actually runs.

Jess is a perfect example, holding down the front desk and keeping the whole place ticking ๐Ÿ™Œ And we're always keen to meet more people who want to be part of it.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Think this could be you? Send your resume and cover letter to [email protected], we'd genuinely love to hear from you.

Welcome back to Know More Monday ๐Ÿ‘‹ This week we're tackling the three letters that make every business owner sigh: BAS.

If you're registered for GST, your Business Activity Statement is how you square things up with the ATO. For most businesses that's every quarter, though if your turnover's really humming along, you may need to lodge more often.

So what's actually in it? Your BAS pulls together the GST you've collected on sales, the GST you've paid on expenses, PAYG withholding for your employees, and sometimes PAYG instalments towards your own income tax. A few moving parts, which is exactly why it trips people up.

The fix is refreshingly simple: stay organised, know your lodgement dates, and let a bookkeeper or accountant handle it properly. Do that, and BAS goes from a quarterly headache to a non-event ๐Ÿ™Œ

Want yours off your plate for good? That's where we come in ๐Ÿ‘€

Every accountant eventually hits the same fork in the road, and most firms make you pick a side ๐Ÿ‘€

Here's the thing: at AKW, you don't have to choose. We're big enough to offer real variety of work and a genuine path to senior roles, but locally owned, with directors who sit on local sports club boards, charities and not-for-profits. Deep roots in the region, without the growth bottleneck of a smaller firm.

Big enough to grow. Local enough to actually be part of this region. Turns out you can have both ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ“ฉ Sound like the kind of career you've been after? Send your resume to [email protected], we'd love to hear from you.

Your accountant looks after your numbers. A wealth adviser looks after what those numbers are actually for ๐Ÿค

The difference is a big one. A wealth adviser is focused on your bigger picture, and giving you back two things most people are short on: time and energy. By taking the worry and admin off your plate, you get to spend both on what actually matters to you.

It comes down to confidence, knowing you can fund the lifestyle you want now and down the track, with your money working as hard as it can for you.

Best part? The first chat is obligation-free.

Nearly 100 years in the same region isn't an accident ๐Ÿค

Real advice from real people who actually know the area, not a call centre in another state or an app that's never been out here. When your accountant already understands your world, everything gets easier.

98 years. 11 offices. One local team, because we've never been anything else.

Trusts: brilliant when they're set up right, a real headache when they're not ๐Ÿ‘€

Traditionally, trusts have done two jobs really well, protecting your assets and giving you a smart way to distribute money across the family. That part hasn't changed.

What has changed is everything around them. Recent budget updates have shifted the goalposts, and trusts are now a major focus area for the ATO, especially when it comes to non-compliance. In other words, this is not the space to be winging it.

Getting it right takes genuine, specialised knowledge, and that's exactly the kind of thing 98 years in the industry teaches you ๐Ÿค

Here's something most people get wrong about their super: your will has nothing to do with it ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Beneficiary nominations are one of those things people set once, tick off, and never look at again. The problem? Life doesn't sit still. Marriage, kids, divorce, a new relationship, losing someone, it all changes who you'd actually want that money going to.

But your nomination doesn't update itself, and super doesn't automatically follow your will. If it's out of date, your hard-earned super could end up in completely the wrong hands.

The fix takes five minutes. The mistake can last a lot longer than that.

Not sure when you last reviewed yours? Book a call with our SMSF and super team and we'll make sure it still says what you want it to ๐Ÿ“ž

Everyone loves the idea of running their own super, right up until they meet the fine print ๐Ÿ‘€

An SMSF puts you in the driver's seat: instead of a retail or industry fund, you choose the investments yourself, shares, property, managed funds, fixed interest. As a rough guide it starts to stack up once your balance is around $200,000. Below that, the running costs can quietly eat any benefit.

The catch? More control means more responsibility. It's not set-and-forget, there's annual audits, ATO reporting and strict rules. The most common mistake we see is people spending more on compliance than they ever paid in their old fund ๐Ÿซ

We manage 200+ SMSFs across regional NSW, so we know when it's worth it and when it isn't.

Wondering if an SMSF stacks up for you? Book a call & chat to the professionals ๐Ÿค
