If your P&L is 30 days old, your decisions are 30 days late.
A lot of businesses still work this way, closing the books and waiting weeks for the reports, so by the time anyone looks at the numbers, they are already out of date.
Cash flow problems and opportunities do not wait for the next report, so by the time the numbers are ready, the opportunities have often passed.
The businesses doing well are watching their cash position as it moves and catching issues early, because staying on top of today takes more effort, but it is the one that pays off.

Most CFOs start using AI in the wrong part of the business first.
The instinct is to begin with planning and reporting, because it feels like the strategic part of the job. In practice, the real payback sits lower down.
Invoice processing, reconciliations, and the monthly close are high volume and repetitive, which makes them the easiest place to prove AI actually works.
Planning and forecasting matter, but they are hard to trust when the data underneath is still put together by hand.
Start with the easy, repeated work. Prove it works there. Then move up to the harder stuff.

Profit and cash flow are not the same thing, and mixing them up can hurt a business.
I have seen businesses with good profit numbers still struggle to pay their bills, even though the reports look fine and the bank account tells a different story.
You can make profit look better just by changing when something is recorded, but you cannot do that with cash. It is either there or it is not.
If you only look at profit, you are missing half the picture.

A recent FP&A Trends survey caught my eye.
59% of finance teams take more than five days to produce a forecast. Only 15% do it in under two.
That gap is not about effort. It is usually the data, the systems, and how the work is set up. When those are not working seamlessly, every forecast takes longer than it should.
The teams that are moving quickly did not get faster at forecasting. They built the setup underneath that made speed possible

A lot of small business owners assume every business purchase is automatically deductible. It rarely works that simply.
Some expenses are only partially deductible. Proper records still matter. Timing and business use change the answer. And the ATO rules can shift depending on the type of expense.
Getting deductions wrong can turn into compliance problems and missed claims.
It is worth taking a look at what you are planning to claim. The question is not only whether something is deductible, it is whether you can show why.
If you are unsure about a purchase or deduction?
