Save this post. It's worth going through properly, not just skimming once and forgetting.
New financial year is the one time most business owners naturally stop and check in - but a lot of that checking-in stays surface-level. Budget, structure, cashflow, banking, records, expenses: six areas worth an honest look, because most of them were set up once and never revisited.
Which of these six haven't you looked at in over a year? Tell us below. π

Most tradies we speak to are leaving money on the table at EOFY - not because the deductions don't exist, but because they didn't know what qualified or left it too late to act.
30 June isn't just the end of the financial year. It's the cut-off for a handful of claims that only work if you move before the date.
Swipe through to see what's still on the table, and if any of it applies to your business, give us a call this week.

Owning an investment property comes with real tax advantages β but only if they're claimed correctly and on time.
Depreciation schedules, loan interest, repairs versus capital improvements β these are the areas where we most commonly see property owners either missing deductions or claiming them incorrectly. Both are problems at tax time.
If you haven't reviewed your investment property position before 30 June, there's still time β but not much of it.

Most tradies think the ATO only sees what they report. That's not how it works anymore.
The ATO's data matching program pulls information from licensing bodies, financial institutions, fuel tax registries, and online job platforms β before you've lodged a single return. If your declared income doesn't line up with the picture those sources paint, your return gets flagged.
This isn't about doing anything wrong. It's about making sure your books tell a consistent, defensible story, because the ATO's version of your business already exists. The question is whether yours matches it.
If you're a Gold Coast tradie and you're not sure your records stack up, that's the conversation to have before 30 June, not after a review letter arrives.
