As emerging technologies continue to reshape the business landscape, understanding innovation has become a strategic imperative for finance and business professionals.
More than 40 CPA Australia members from Hong Kong and South China recently gathered in Shenzhen for an immersive exploration of the technologies redefining our future. Visits to Shenzhen Intellifusion Technologies, EngineAI Robotics and BYD offered members a deeper understanding of artificial intelligence, smart city applications, intelligent automation and advanced manufacturing.
Highlights included a sharing session with Dr Alex Deng, Director, Senior Vice President, CFO, HRVP and Board Secretary of Shenzhen Intellifusion Technologies Co., Ltd., as well as live robotics demonstrations and BYD's battery safety and extreme cold charging tests.
What truly elevated the tour experience was the quality of connection. The tour fostered valuable cross-sector dialogue and strategic reflection on the trends unfolding across the Greater Bay Area, and our role in shaping them.

Did you know that businesses are beginning to use satellite data as a source of business intelligence? 🛰️
Combined with AI, space-enabled data can improve decisions about agriculture, mining, infrastructure, sustainability, lending, audit and risk management.
"It's really about a different source of data to improve the decisions that we are making on earth," says expert guest Michelle Khoo, Center Leader, Deloitte Center for the Edge Southeast Asia, where she leads frontier innovation initiatives spanning emerging technologies such as AI, quantum computing and space technologies.
In this episode you'll learn:
• Why the space economy has shifted from rockets to business intelligence
• How satellite data supports better operational and investment decisions
• Where competitive advantage may emerge over the next five years
• How satellite data is already being used in agriculture, insurance, infrastructure and logistics
• Why Southeast Asia is uniquely positioned to benefit
• What business leaders should do now to take advantage
The conversation also explores why satellite imagery is becoming more accessible, how organisations are integrating Earth observation into everyday operations, and why finance leaders should pay attention even if they have never worked in the space sector.
Interestingly, a new Deloitte report titled The Space Edge suggests that by 2030, Southeast Asia could unlock US$100 billion in economic value – not from launching into space, but from using space‑enabled technologies to improve decision-making across industries.🌏
If your role involves strategy, investment, governance, audit or operational decision-making, this episode offers practical examples of how an emerging data source is creating measurable business value.

CFO Josie Pane learnt a sharp career lesson 21 years ago. 💡
And it’s helped define her leadership ever since.
“One day I was speaking with the CEO about how things were being done,” she tells INTHEBLACK.
“There were some problems, and as I was relatively young and new to such a leadership role, I thought he might deal with the problems I raised.”
The CEO’s response shook her.
“Instead, he said, ‘You need to confront those problems and go and address them. You do not get the corner office without doing such things’.
“That very much resonated with me.
“You cannot be in a leadership position without tackling some of the hard stuff, or without approaching people and communicating effectively with them.”
Today, this dynamic FCPA is guiding HVP Plantations. 🌲
And this comes with its own challenges. When your revenue relies on trees that take 25 years to grow, natural disasters become an almost existential risk.
That danger became a reality during the Walwa-Mt Lawson bushfire in January 2026, which burned about 10,800 hectares of the Shelley pine plantation in North-East Victoria. 🔥
“That sort of disaster really changes a business like this,” recalls Pane.
“There were many customers we were going to supply from that plantation crop, and it is not as simple as just replanting it.
“The value loss after an event like that is quite heavy. In addition, we needed to salvage the burnt trees that still had useful timber inside and pay the cost of clearing areas that could not be salvaged for replanting.
“These are big dents in our balance sheet and in our profit and loss.”
Pane’s leadership approach is built on transparency, empathy and accountability. 📈
