What would you do with a $500,000 inheritance at age 50?
Pay off the mortgage? Invest? Contribute to super? Help the kids?
These are some of the biggest financial decisions many people will ever make, and the right answer is rarely as simple as choosing one option.
In this article and short video, I walk through a real-life style case study showing how an inheritance can potentially be used to reduce tax, improve retirement outcomes, reduce debt and support family goals, all while keeping the bigger picture in focus.
Before making a major financial decision, it’s worth understanding how each option impacts your overall financial future.

💰 I’m 65, Still Working and Earning $120,000 p.a. – Should I Start an Account-Based Pension?
Many Australians assume there's no point starting an account-based pension while they're still working.
One of my clients, John, thought exactly that.
At age 65, earning $120,000 per year and planning to retire in a few years, he believed moving from accumulation to pension phase would force him to take money he didn't need and somehow leave him worse off.
The reality surprised him.
By understanding how pension phase works, the tax-free treatment of earnings, and how pension payments can be strategically added back into super, he was able to potentially improve his position by more than $10,000 per year in tax savings.
✅ Tax-free pension income after age 60
✅ Tax-free earnings inside an account-based pension (once age 60 and have met a condition of release)
✅ Strategies to avoid unnecessarily reducing retirement capital
✅ Using pension payments to fund deductible super contributions
✅ Planning the transition from work to retirement
If you're over 60, still working and wondering whether an account-based pension makes sense for you, this is worth a look.
